Mariko Yashida first met the X-Man Wolverine during his first visit to Japan as part of the X-Men. They were attracted to each other instantly, but Mariko initially rejected his advances because her father had promised her to another man. Wolverine later returned to Japan and discovered that her betrothed was actually beating her. Wolverine confronted Lord Shingen in single combat and slew him as well as her betrothed, and Mariko promised to marry Wolverine. On the day they were to be wed, Mariko declared herself unworthy of marrying Wolverine due to her discovering that her clan was involved in illegal activites. Wolverine accepted this, and Mariko became head of Clan Yashida. They still had a relationship, Mariko even cared for Wolverine's adopted daughter, Akiko. To stop a war between two clans, Mariko agreed to undergo the tradition of slicing off one of her fingers. The blade she was given was coated with the blowfish toxin, for which there is no cure, and she died in Wolverine's arms.
