Meditations, V

there was a woman, and no cat in her, who saved my life once.
there was a man, spirit in him dry and dusty like the wisest books,
wild and warm like the simplest truths,
                and he saved my life.
                he saved me a piece
        from his own dinner
        and fed me life.
there was a man, and i did not save his life.
there was a woman, and she died.  she was dead.
                and 'you let him die.'
                'you let them all die.'
        and i did.
        and i saved them all.

there was myself, and my life still in
                                        question.
