BOLLYWOOD'S BEST
DVDS THAT ENTERTAIN
AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY
(1977)
English and Arabic subtitles on print, 172
minutes,
Full Screen.
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna,
Rishi
Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Parveen Babi, Helen.
Dialogue by Kader Khan. Music is by
Laaxmikant
Pyarelal.
Playback singers: Lata Mangeshkar,
Mohammed Rafi, and
others.
Picture Quality: Good.
Audio: Good 2 channel mono.
Released by Baba Traders of Queens, NY.
The print used has seen better days, yet
overall has
very good definition and color retention.
Scratches
and blemishes are present, however,
especially during
reel changes of the film.
AAA
is a wild,
action-packed, and relentlessly illogical
story of
three brothers who are separated from
their parents
at a young age through some unfortunate
and
unbelievable circumstances: the mother
becomes blind
from a falling branch and the father
exchanges places
with his tormentors after crashing down a
steep hill
in their car filled with gold and escaping
without a
scratch with the booty.
It would take forever to relate the twists
and turns
and U-turns in the script. One wild scene
has the 3
grown-up brothers giving blood to an
unknown sick
woman - their mother! The script, with
plots and
subplots galore, has more holes than swiss
cheese.
Yet, if you're willing to suspend
disbelief, just sit
back and enjoy the star power of the 3
stars, the
memorable award-winning songs and
picturizations of
them. Especially Amitabh's latin
excursion- the wild
and campy "My Name is Anthony
Gonzalves."..
••UPDATE•• AAA HAS RECENTLY BEEN RELEASED BY DEI IN A MUCH HIGHER QUALITY DVD. UNFORTUNATELY, UNLIKE BABA TRADERS'S DVD, IT DOES NOT CONTAIN SONG SUBTITLING.
MR. NATWARLAL
(1979)- EROS/DEI-155
minutes-English subtitles. Amitabh
Bachchan, Rehka, Amjad Khqan, Kader Khan.
Video- excellent for a 20 year old film.
Most likely was transferred from the
original film negative. Audio- acceptable,
considering the limitations of a mono
soundtrack.
Perhaps the best-looking dvd
of Bachchan made by EROS/DEI.
Unfortunately, it is also by far the
weakest movie of the previous Bachchan
releases. "Mr. Natwarlal" is a very slow
paced, poorly written and directed film .
A very overweight and bloated Amjad Khan
fails to project any menace as the villain
(Vicky). And despite the best efforts of
Amitabh and Rekha, the film lacks the
energy or excitement of most of Mr.
Bachchan's films made during this period.
Amitabh makes his movie playback singing
debut with the rather ordinary- "Mere Pass
Aao, Mere Dosto." There is one excellent
song- "Pardesia," which is very nicely
choreographed. For Amitabh fans only..
MUQADDAR KA SIKANDER
(1978) Released by EROS/DEI. Subtitled. With great Urdu dialogue. Especially the graveyard scene, where a young Sikander is given some wise advice by a sage.
Time hasn't diminished the enjoyment of this Amitabh hit. Sure it's a bit dated. Still, you have Amitabh giving a great restrained perfomance (some of the overacting stars of today should take heed) as the orphan Sikander.
The DVD uses a colorful though soft print, which has some speckles, especially early in the film. The mono audio is fine, although slightly muddled. Still it's alot of fun to see Amitabh, especially in the great nightclub scene near the end. A classic.
