| "At the time
we made the picture, Mitchum was in jail on a marijuana charge. This script
was a desperate attempt to prove to the court that RKO was suffering because
Mitchum was in jail. He was actually assigned to this picture after he went
to jail. When he was still in jail, I went down to Mexico and shot the end
of each of the sequences of the chase first, Bill Bendix chasing Mitchum.
Then three months later I went back to the same locations and shot the front
part of the chase with Mitchum. naturally my attitude towards the picture
had to be one of fun because I didn't take the story and whole situation
seriously. You mustn't judge this film on a very high level. Its standards
are modest."
(Lovell Interviews, S. 52) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Als wir diesen Film drehten, saß Mitchum wegen Marihuana-Besitzes im Gefängnis. Das Drehbuch war der verzweifelte Versuch, dem Gericht zu beweisen, daß RKO durch Mitchums Gefängnisaufenthalt geschädigt wurde. Genau genommen kam er erst auf die Besetzungsliste, als er schon im Gefängnis saß. Er war noch nicht wieder frei, als ich mich nach Mexiko aufmachte und das Ende der Verfolgungsjagd zuerst drehte, Bill Bendix, der hinter Mitchum her ist. Drei Monate später kehrten wir an den selben Ort zurück und drehten den ersten Teil der Jagd mit Mitchum. Meine Haltung zu dem Film war eher, Spaß zu haben, denn den Plot und die ganzen Umstände konnte ich nicht ernst nehmen. Man darf sich den Film nicht mit größeren Erwartungen ansehen; seine Ansprüche sind bescheiden. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
 I immediately hired Robert Pirosh, a top writer with a wonderful sense of humour. Recently he had won an Academy Award for writing the screenplay Battleground. In case he had to leave RKO before we had finished the film, as he had other commitments, I hired another excellent writer, Danny Mainwaring. The script, thanks to the skill of these two, moved with pace and was filled with humour. Being under ecxlusive contract to RKO was entirely different from Warner Brothers. For one thing Hughes had nothing to do with the making of The Big Steal - except which lady was playing the lead role. All the other executives were in fear of my connection with Hughes. They had absolutely no contact of any sort with him, so I was completely left alone, exclusive contract, no bther at all. After finishing the picture, I saw Hughes and asked that my exclusive contract be broken, as I didn't like the pictures he was thinking of making. He was sorry I wanted to leave and thought I was making a mistake. But he graciously let me go. Siegel Film 125-131 |
