This may be one of the most hyped up movies ever and for many
people this may have spoilt the experienceof what was for me
one of the scariest and innovative movies I have ever seen.
I can only imagine what it would have been like to have been
one of the first people to see the movie at the 1999 Sundance
Film Festival when the audience was unsure whether what they
were seeing was fact or fiction.
The key to enjoying the full impact of this movie is to forget
everything you have heard and try to visualise that this is
actually long lost footage taken by a group of students who
went missing in the forest. Pretend you found the footage yourself
and are playing it for the first time. You won't expect editing
or sound effects and you will be caught up in the nightmare
that befell the unfortunate film makers.
The basic story is now well known. Three students set off with
the aim of filming a documentary about a local legend: The Blair
Witch. The interview some local weirdoes in the twon of Blair
then set off into the forested hills to film the area where
the witch is purported to have lived. Things do not go according
to plan and generally get very spooky. What makes it so creepy
for the audience is the jerky hand held camera action and the
sense of genuine fear on the part of the main characters. The
greatest terror of all is the fear of the unknown and this comes
through continually as the footage builds to the final climax.
A genuinely creepy movie. Don't expect to catch me camping
in the woods for a long long time.
