Eddie Murphy returns to the latex for this sequel to his 1996
hit Unfortunately, as with many sequels, this one adds nothing
new, and instead just gives us two hours of the same gag, which
soon becomes tiresome.
The story picks up where the last film left off. Eddie Murphy
stars as planet sized genius Sherman Klump who is keen to marry
girlfriend Denise (Janet Jackson) but is haunted by his super
trim alter ego Buddy Love (Murphy again). By a very dubious
scientific premise, Sherman tries to extract Buddy's DNA from
his own, but it somehow gets combined with Buster the dog's
DNA and Buddy escapes as a separate person determined to wreak
havoc with Sherman's life.
That's pretty much the plot, which is wafer thin because most
of the screen time is actually taken up by the antics of the
rest of Sherman's obnoxious and oversized family. Eddie Murphy
takes on the roles of grumpy and impotent Papa Klump, simpering
and frustrated Mama Klump, oversexed Grandma Klump, and laybout
brother Ernie Klump. In the previous film, the Klumps were a
clever and hilarious idea. In this movie, they start off interestingly
enough with a predictably funny scene at an 'all you can eat'
restaurant, but their constant bickering soons wears pretty
thin as they seem to run out of ideas for things to say.
Eddie Murphy is clearly a talented and funny guy. The makeup
and special effects are spectacularly clever. There is also
a crazy sci fi dream sequence that spoofs Star Wars, 2001: A
Space Odyssey, and Armageddon. There's even a scene that pays
homage to The Karate Kid. But even with the great effects and
references to two of my all time favourite movies, nothing can
save this film from its dodgy plot, puerile jokes, and low brow
script.
Overall, with a bit of effort, this could have been much better.
However, as it is really just two hours worth of the same joke,
you might be better off just watching the highlights in the
trailer.
