Despite the simplicity and familiarity of the plot behind "Burnt Offerings", the moviemakers have managed to stretch this one to 115 minutes. Meanwhile, "The Changeling" is six minutes shorter and tells a much more sophisicated story. "Burnt Offerings" is rated PG, and so there isn't going to be a great deal of violence or any other gratuitous elements. Needless to say, it's going to bore quite a few horror fans. If Beavis from Beavis & Butt-Head saw it, he'd probably say, "This sucks! It's called 'Burnt Offerings', but nothing gets set on fire!" Even so, the movie is not without its charm. There is a creepy chauffeur apparition who resembles Judge Doom from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", and the crazy ending has an interesting twist (though some things get thrown out the window, so to speak). Horror veteran Karen Black gives a menacing performance near the end, where she really looks poised to kill somebody. Also, it's always nice to see the Dunsmuir mansion being filmed in horror movies (it also appears in "Phantasm"). The bottom line: "Burnt Offerings" is not recommended for those expecting a lot of action, but some haunted house buffs might enjoy it. |

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the higher the rating. 12 is a masterpiece. One or no dots is also a masterpiece, if you consider poop to be a gourmet ingredient. ** |
