"Gothic" is one of the most hallucinary horror movies out there, which is hardly surprising considering it has been directed by Ken Russell (who also made strange, sexual movies like "Lair of the White Worm" and "Crimes of Passion"). When I first saw it, I thought someone put some psilocybin in my Cheerios. It has tons of hallucinations ranging from pixie-eared creatures to a megaphallic suit of armor. The suit of armor is vaguely reminiscent of "Testuo", a surreal, black-and-white Japanese monster movie where one of characters has a very large drill for a penis. Behind all the strange visions is the plot of five literary giants who get together in a Swiss villa and get the living crap scared out of them. Evidently, this exercise in fear has inspired horror classics like "Vampyre" and "Frankenstein". Unfortunately, this story takes a back seat to all the horrific phantasms and the wildly eccentric behavior from the characters, and the result is a movie that is difficult to follow, even with its ensemble of talented actors. The bottom line: "Gothic" is one of the most spectacular--though not really one of the best--horror movies out there. |

OVERALL RATING
** NOTE: The more dots, the better the movie. A dozen dots is as good as they get, while one or no dots accounts for what can euphemistically be labeled "bottom-of-the-barrel entertainment." ** |
