"Grim Prarie Tales" (named after Grimm's Fairy Tales?) is a horror anthology with a distinctly Western flavor. A prosperous, uptight city slicker (Brad Dourif) meets a wily bounty hunter (James Earl Jones) in the middle of a desert. Of course, they pass the time by telling stories--a total of four--to each other. The first story is about an old white guy who passes through a sacred Indian burial ground (oops, sacred Native-American burial ground) and gets buried alive. That's it. Really. The second story involves a traveler who shelters a pretty woman in the middle of nowhere. She thanks him by toying with his testosterones and sucking his entire body inside her vagina. This one seems rather pointless, but I like what she does to him. As for the third story, a family of pioneers claims some land that has been paid for in blood, and just when the story is getting somewhere, it ends abruptly. Ugh! The fourth and final story: This one involves a duel with an unusual aftermath. Out of the four stories, this one is the best. It has a stylish animation sequence with the dead Mexican haunting the hired gunman, and the ending is not quite as abrupt as those from the three other stories. This movie has a very good cast, but someone has apparently forgotten to tell the writer that ending stories is annoying when they're only 80-90% finished! Save for the intimidating performance by James Earl Jones, this is not a very scary movie. The bottom line: While "Grim Prarie Tales" has its good points, there are better anthologies out there, better anthologies with satisfying endings to their stories. |
