"The Night Flier" is a vampire movie adapted from a Stephen King story and has received limited exposure in the theatres and pretty much gone direct-to-video. It certainly does have a direct-to-video appearance to it, and except for Miguel Ferrer, the cast is composed entirely of unknown actors. Since direct-to-video movies tend to be mediocre, it raises a question: "Should I watch this all the way through?" The first quarter of the movie is not particularly interesting, though it does get better once Miguel Ferrer starts tracking down the vampiric Renfield, whose cape is "black as a woodchuck's ass" (as one witness describes it). The idea of having a vampire flying around in a private airplane seems questionable, but the movie manages to make it work by integrating it as part of a murder mystery. The ending (not to be unveiled here) is pretty dark and bloody, which is still a welcome change from those typical, happy Hollywood finales. Even so, "The Night Flier" is far from perfect and suffers from the fact that its protagonist is cold, deceptive, and thus not very likable (unfortunately Ferrer, who is actually a pretty decent actor, has to be this character). Overall, this horror movie is okay and benefits from a good amount of gore, but it would have been a lot better if they make the protagonist easier to identify with. |
