RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD III

Quite often the second sequel in a series will try to take things in a new direction, and "Return of the Living Dead III" follows suit by turning the series on its side. While the previous two Return of the Living Dead movies have mobs of zombies lurking everywhere and a rather comedic flavor, this particular movie has only a few zombies and a much more romantic angle to it. Although zombies only tend to be scary in numbers for many horror buffs, the few zombies here are still scary since they are a particularly vigorous and swift breed, and some of them are grossly disfigured. Director Brian Yuzna, as usual, is not shy about making things as grotesque as possible, and several well-known horror make-up and special effects experts make things look convincing. Also, the movie has the excellent setting of a sewer. You can never go wrong with sewers: they're dark, claustrophobic, and swimming with all kinds of nasty things. About the only two glaring flaws are (1) the Pet Sematary blunder of wrongly resurrecting things even when the horrible side effects are known well in advance and (2) the gang of Hispanic(?) thugs (more specifically, the big guy who sounds more than a little like Jesse "The Body" Ventura trying to pass as a cholo gangster), but aside from those carps, this is a worthy addition to the Return of the Living Dead series. The bottom line: "Return of the Living Dead III" is a good horror film, almost as good as the original, which is saying quite a bit.

QUARTER BY QUARTER ANALYSIS OF MOVIE

OVERALL RATING

8 out of 12

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 12 dots on the domino is the best rating while no dots means it would only take up valuable space in the dumpster. **
