"Return of the Living Dead" is an unofficial sequel to "Night of the Living Dead", but the punked-out, comparitively campy direction of Dan O'Bannon readily distinguishes it from the mostly serious 1968 classic directed and written by George Romero. Actually, this movie is more like "Night of the Demons" than "Night of the Living Dead", and it's a good one. Don Calfa does a nice performance as a seedy-looking undertaker, and Linnea Quigley, well...gets fully naked, of course. There is a good amount of gore, and the zombies don't just lumber, they run! The zombies also have enough presence of mind to lure policemen and paramedics to their deaths! The movie ends with a real bang too (see for yourself). My carp with "Return of the Living Dead" is the inconsistent soundtrack. Sometimes they blast on the punk rock when the zombies are attacking, and sometimes the standard, instrumental horror background music accompanies the marauding monsters. When the standard instrumental stuff is playing, the mood becomes creepy. However, when the punk rock is on, it all feels like a wild party is happening instead. Oscillating between the two kinds of music makes the movie seem a bit schizoid, but aside from that quirk, this is, overall, one of the better horror movies from the 80's. |

** NOTE: The more dots, the better it is. 12 dots indicates a masterpiece while no dots means it's a "disasterpiece." ** |
