Given the fact that "Shiver of the Vampires" is a French horror movie from 1970, you might be expecting something psychedelic yet arty and probably full of nudity, and this movie delivers on all three counts. Indeed, stoner rock dominates the soundtrack. Sometimes it adds an appropriately sinister mood to the movie while other times it sounds out of place. The movie is definitely "arty" too. By far, the movie's strongest point is the visuals. In fact, most of the development has been directed for looks rather than plot, though a story with tepid lesbian scenes and bizarre theological discussions about ancient Egyptian gods and vampirism still holds some appeal. It's too bad that it rewards you with a rather dissatisfying (but dark) ending. As for nudity, it's plentiful alright, enough to leave you wondering if "Shiver of the Vampires" is to be another soft-core porno masquerading as a horror flick. Half of the time in this movie, naturally well-endowed women are wandering around or sleeping in the nude, but there aren't any amateurish sex scenes and the nudity partially serves as a means of making the women more vulnerable to vampirism. The bottom line: While not a masterpiece, "Shiver of the Vampires" isn't too shabby either, especially if eye-candy is a top priority. |
