"Vampyros Lesbos" is perhaps the best known of the numerous lesbian vampire movies released in 1970 (two others are "Shiver of the Vampires" and "The Vampire Lovers"). As you might expect from something made in 1970, it is very psychedelic with its bizarre soundtrack, colorful lighting, and aggressive zooming habits from the camera. Plus, "Vampyros Lesbos" has some rather disorienting transitions between dreams and reality. It even goes the extra mile by adding symbolic shots involving scorpions, butterflies, and octagonal kites. When you couple all these things to a cosmopolitan cast speaking German in an exotic Turkish setting, then you might as well be taking LSD or psilocybin because this movie is definitely a trip. Of course, as the title suggests, it is about lesbian vampires, and the emphasis is on atmosphere, nudity, and eroticism rather than suspense or gore. Because of this emphasis, you could argue that "Vampyros Lesbos" is more like soft-core pornography than anything else, though a gory shot of a missing eye and some lore about vampires would easily land this movie in the horror category as well. Whether you're watching it for the eroticism or the horror aspect, the viewing experience is uneven. Expressing the viewing experience with just punctuation marks would go like this: ??!!?...?!...?!...? The first third of the movie is amusing because it is so surreal and gets down to the lusty lesbian business soon enough, but afterwards it begins to drag and thus loses some of its charm. This really could have been a 70-minute movie, but it seems as though they've needlessly tried to stretch it out toward the 90 minute mark. Overall, "Vampyros Lesbos" deserves about an average rating; while it has some choice nudity and interesting visuals, it loses quite a bit of steam going into the middle. |
