Referred to as the Ghazal King, Jagjit Singh has been enchanting the ghazal lovers all the world over with his deep masculine voice and soothing tunes. Right from "Unforgettables" to "Soz",one can sense the touch his ghazals induce.Jagjit Singh is now 60.
I do not remember exactly when his spell got over me. Now I am almost crazy about his ghazals.Sort of fallen in love with his voice kinda thing. A day doesnot seem to be a day without a jagjit. I am trying to collect most of Jagjit's albums. My favourite jagjits are Gulshan ki faqat,Jawani ke hilee,Sarakti jayee hai, Sadma to hain mujhe bhi,Pyar mujhse jo kiya tumne,Tum nahin ayee, Kabhi yun bhi to ho and lots and lots more.
I have enjoyed a concert of this legend and never was I so mesmerised by a song than that particular Punjabi number.I was dumbfounded and was there like a statue wondering what the heck was happenning to me.Mind you,I could not make out the meaning of even a single word of that number.
This picture you see above is tried by myself. As you can see it is crude and not as attractive as Jagjitji actually is. Afterall I used to get lowest marks in drawing in my class.
And yeah I hail from such a place where people do not speak Hindi at all and, you think it right, I face problems in comprehending his ghazals. But that was before I started learning Hindi. Now not only am I learning Hindi but Urdu and Punjabi as well. I have, now, some little knowledge of these languages and it helps me relishing his ghazals more tastefully.
Lots of sites are giving lyrics of jagjits and I abandoned the idea of doing the same because I know you are smarter than me! For pictures, lyrics, tour dates and more information about this ghazal giant please click here
