Part 5

"Is this where we will be training?" Cat asked as she looked around the sparse room. The room was actually part of some closed martial arts studio just a small ways off from school. She had arrived directly after school and David gave her an explanation of some the main threats of Sunnydale. After this discussion they proceeded to walk down a hall toward a room.

"Yes it will be as unfortunately I have been unable to get a job working at your school. This is the closest place to your school that the watchers council could obtain." David answered in reply. " And now we should begin your training as learning combat skills will be essential to surviving as slayer." David stated leaving no room for doubt that it was important.

"Okay," Cat answered. "What do we do to start?"

"We start," David began while he opened a closet, "with some unarmed combat as very seldom will you be able to just come up to a vampire and stake them so learning these skills are essential. After you have mastered that we will move on to the stake and how to stake a vampire in the heart."

The training went wonderfully well, as Cat seemed to pick up on what she needed to learn at an astounding pace. The training went for about an hour and a half until David asked her to stop. David then declared after he had rested for a moment. "Catherine, you seemed to have learned this well enough and quickly enough that it's time for you to go out and actually fight the vampires. Since most slayers have to undergo what could be termed 'on the job training'. Now don't worry as I will be close by to observe."

The walk to The Bronze was short but informative as David informed Catherine about a few of the many ways you could tell a vampire apart from other people besides their very noticeable facial changes which usually occurred when they were about to feed if at all. Shortly before they came within sight of the Bronze, David fell back a little saying he would be close enough to be there if she needed him.

As she entered the door Catherine looked around for any familiar faces that she might recognize from her two days of school. Before very long a fairly drunk guy who she recognized from one of her classes staggered toward her.

"Hello, you're that new girl from LA, right?" the guy slurred. "I'm Ben, what's your name beautiful?"

While he looked good Catherine had no inclination to get involved with someone at this time. He was also drunk and she didn't want to have to deal with a drunk person while she was supposed to be looking out for vampires. So she very politely gave him the brush off. Ben then half walked; half-staggered to a table were a group of people were gathered round.

As the night went on she noticed one person in particular, a red haired pale skinned girl who seemed to be hitting on any guy who seemed single in the place. Something about her struck Cat as odd so she kept an eye on the red head. Before long her suspicions were confirmed as she saw her pass fairly close to a mirror and leave no reflection.

At about 10:30 the red head seemed to settle on a fairly tall, pale skinned guy who Cat remembered hearing as being the captain of the basketball team. As both the guy and the red head turned to leave out the side exit which opened into the alley Cat followed.

As soon as she got out the door she heard a scream and raced to get to the source. She rounded the corner to find that yes, her suspicions were definitely correct as the girl had the guy pinned to a brick wall. As the vampire bent her neck to drink, Catherine threw her stake hoping to get the heart and be done with the vampire, with out having to engage in a long battle right away.

Unfortunately the vampire moved shortly after she threw the stake and it missed completely, bouncing harmlessly off the brick. The vampire turned around to face the potential threat while letting go of the guy who promptly ran off.

"Well are you going to attack me or just stand there like someone in desperate need of dental work." Catherine taunted hoping to goad the vampire into coming at her blindly. Unfortunately the vampire was apparently smart as it seemed ready to bid it's time confident that she would have to engage her. At least for a second then a look crossed her face.

"Okay, bored now," The red haired vampire said as she charged at Catherine while at the same time managing to avoid the stake the slayer tried to get at her heart.

The fight proceeded fast and furious with each blocking each other's punches and kicks. They seemed fairly evenly matched until the vampire stumbled over something and fell. Cat brought down her stake hoping to stake the vampire and get the fight over with.

Just before the stake could penetrate, a strong hand caught her arm and not only stopped the stake but threw her up against one of the brick walls in the alley. Catherine was only temporarily stunned but even the short time it took to recover was too much as a blonde female vampire pinned her face down and held her wrists behind her so that Catherine couldn't break free from her grip. So she tried kicking at this new opponent but she wasn't letting go. She saw David trying to help only to be knocked unconscious by the red haired vampire.

"If you don't stop kicking me you will not only die but beg for it as you will be in so much pain that having every bone in your body broken will feel good." The blonde vampire stated in a voice that would brook no argument if only from the sheer emotionless coldness it radiated. "Willow, don't kill the watcher now!" As she turned her head toward the other vampire who greeted this order with a sullen pout. "I know you want to but not yet. I haven't had a good challenge yet so let them live temporarily."

"Now then," She said in a falsely sweet voice having again focused her attention on Catherine, "getting back to our conversation. You are the new slayer aren't you? Well normally you would be out of luck because killing slayers is a sport to me like golfing is a sport for rich guys with bad clothes." At this a fairly unsettling laugh erupted from 'Willow'. "I want you to realize that your life is within my hands now dear. You do realize that I can do just about any thing I want to at this point don't you?" At this Catherine tensed slightly trying to prepare herself for any immediate pain.

This prompted a brief look of admiration. "You've got heart girl but luckily for you, I have been feeling pretty bored lately. I mean no challenges, the slayers die so easy and even their pleas for death don't get the same feeling that they used to. So for now only you get a get out of jail free card to improve yourself strictly for my amusement. I mean I will still kill you anyway, there's nothing you can do about that."

"Do you have a point or are you just going to listen to the sound of your own voice." Catherine interrupted. She knew it was probably foolish to interrupt a ranting vampire but she felt it important to herself to show that she had no fear.

"Oh, you have got guts girl almost reminds me of..." the vampire trailed off, "...another slayer I knew. I wouldn't do that again though, I don't have much of a temper but any other vampire out there would have killed you for that. Now my point being that I am going to let you live now but not after I basically shatter any trust you have for anyone connected to the part of slaying. After I destroy your hope and shatter you I will then kill you in the most long and drawn out way possible. Trust me it only starts with breaking all your bones. I am going to leave you now but not before I leave you with a question you should ask your watcher. Ask your watcher about me, my name is Buffy Summers. You'll learn why you should be afraid." At the close of her sentence she slammed Catherine up against the wall very hard, hard enough to actually knock the wind out of her.

In the very short time that it took Catherine to recover the two vampires had quickly left. By this time David had recovered from his assault as well. Catherine had decided that she had had enough for one night as she helped David to his feet.

The walk back seemed to drag much more than the walk down. Cat decided to ask him about Buffy and why she should be afraid. "That vampire told me to ask you about someone named Buffy Summers. Do you know anything about her?" Cat asked.

Her watcher almost imperceptibly seemed to hitch in his stride but recovered rather quickly. "I don't know anything about her." David answered though his eyes seemed to mask something.

As they continued Cat saw that David was hiding something and resolved to herself that she was going to find out more for herself tomorrow.
