Let the games begin

Maeve took a deep breath of the sunny, spring air then exhaled it with a sigh of pleasure. She smiled at her companions. "Isn't this just the most perfect day?" she gushed.

Sinbad couldn't help but smile back at her. "It is beautiful," he agreed. And so was she. But Sinbad felt it wise to keep that particular opinion to himself. "I've heard that Menos is a beautiful town," he commented.

"How much further do you think?" Maeve questioned.

Firouz had the map and he studied it intently. "By my calculations, I would say that we should be there....." He paused to look up and point. "...any time now," Firouz concluded, grinning. Below them was a fertile valley and a well worn pathway leading into Menos. From the distance it looked to be whitewashed in sunshine.

Doubar studied the scene before him. "Looks friendly enough," he declared, turning to grin at Sinbad. "Won't that be a nice change, little brother?"

Sinbad nodded. "Indeed it will, Doubar," he replied, whole-heartedly. For he felt in serious need of some harmless diversion. Especially after their latest adventure. In the city of Aalis they had battled several magic demons in order to save a young couple from being consumed by black sorcery. Now Sinbad wanted a chance to relax. They were heading to Menos to deliver a message to an old friend of the Caliph's, and then they were under orders to take some, well deserved, time for themselves.

Maeve tapped Sinbad's arm. "So who is this friend of the Caliph's?" she asked, with a bright curiosity. "Someone important?"

"I would say so," Sinbad drawled, revealing his dimpled grin. "Rhenee and the Caliph were young * lovers* once...long ago. I believe he was just a boy of sixteen and she a young girl of fifteen."

"How sweet!," Maeve exclaimed "Why didn't they marry?"

Sinbad shrugged. "Politics. Rhenee was the daughter of a merchant. She wasn't considered appropriate *wife* material for a future Caliph."

Maeve scowled. "That's ridiculous!" she spat. "Love is what matters. Not position."

"That's easy for us to say, Maeve," Sinbad countered softly. "We're simple folk."

"It wasn't always that way for you, Sinbad," Maeve retorted. "Your parents were wealthy. And so were you. Doubar told me that the Caliph even offered you the hand of his niece in marriage."

Sinbad stared at the sorceress in disbelief. "How did you know that?" But even as he asked, Sinbad turned to glare at his brother. "Doubar...you have a big mouth," he chastised.

Doubar wasn't at all penitent. "It's not exactly a secret, Sinbad," he countered in his own defense. "And, besides...Maeve asked."

Now it was Maeve's turn to glare at the giant man. "Doubar!" she screeched, feeling her face flush with embarrassment. She had never intended that Sinbad know she had asked about his past.

Sinbad was surprised by this information. He frowned at Maeve. "If you wanted to know, why didn't you ask me?" he inquired.

"I...uh..." Maeve wanted to scream in frustration as she stumbled over her words. "It was no big deal," she declared firmly. "It just...came up one day. Right, Doubar?" Maeve's eyes pleaded silently with Doubar to agree with her.

He grinned, but nodded. "That's right," he confirmed.

Sinbad eyed them both with suspicion. He was about to respond when he was startled by Firouz's cry of pain. Sinbad ran over to the inventor, who was hopping around and holding one hand to his neck. "Firouz!" Sinbad cried. "What's wrong?"

Firouz shook his head. "Bee sting!" he replied. Then he amended, "I think." Firouz grimaced at the biting pain in his neck and looked at Sinbad. "Would you see if he left his stinger?" he requested, tilting his head.

Maeve watched the men for a moment then decided that, since Sinbad was otherwise preoccupied, she would continue on to Menos on her own. By the time he and the others caught up to her, with a little luck, Sinbad should have forgotten all about their present topic of conversation.

Rongar watched Maeve go, but didn't point this out to the others. He realized that she needed some time alone. So he redirected his attention to Sinbad and Firouz.

*****

As Maeve neared the outskirts of Menos, she realized she had quite a good lead on Sinbad and the others. And she was glad. She was still feeling a little embarrassed at being caught out at having shown such a personal interest in Sinbad. But how could she not? Maeve defended her actions. Sinbad was a complex man. Noble, brave, heroic and good. But he was also mysterious and intriguing....as well as closemouthed about himself. Not that Maeve could complain, for she was unwilling to share tidbits about herself...and fair was fair.

No matter, Maeve decided as she picked up her pace. Menos lay before her, and it truly was spectacular. White stone buildings, lush gardens, and glittering sunshine awaited her. Just as a smile crossed her lips, a woman's scream rent the air. Maeve stopped in her tracks. The cry was close by. Instincts sent her running into the wooded area to her left. And a moment later she came across a young woman, who was cowering against a tree. Two, overgrown, men were harassing her.

"Leave her be!" Maeve shouted.

The men turned to face her and the bigger one grinned. "Well, well... Another beauty," he drawled to his companion. "Now we won't have to share."

Maeve let her eyes turn icy as she drew her sword. "Sorry boys," she told them. "I'm not on the menu. So...which one is it going to be first?"

Mr. big guy stepped forward with a confident swagger. "Come now, pretty. I don't want to have to hurt you," he said.

"Hmph..." Maeve's smile was cold. "I'd like to see you try. Course...I don't think you're man enough..." she drawled.

"Why you..." big guy was furious. With a bellow of outrage, he lunged at Maeve, only to find himself on his back staring up at her. A moment later the hilt of her sword connected with his forehead and darkness claimed him.

Maeve smiled at the other man, who was staring at his downed companion in disbelief. 'You're turn," she told him.

"N...no," he stuttered. "Never mind." And so saying he ran off.

"Are you all right?" Maeve asked the young woman, as she resheathed her sword.

"Yes...thank you." The woman smiled. "I'm Briseis. I can't thank you enough."

Maeve patted her shoulder. "No thanks are necessary. I'm just glad I could help. Do you live in Menos?"

Briseis nodded. "Yes. You're a stranger here," she commented.

"Aye." The sorceress held out her hand. "I'm Maeve. My companions and I have a bit of business to take care of in your beautiful town, and then we hope to enjoy the sights."

"I'd be happy to show all of you around," Briseis said. She gazed over Maeve's shoulder. "Uh...where are your companions?"

Maeve smiled. "Oh...they'll be coming along. Eventually." She gestured for Briseis to precede her. "I'll walk you into town."

Briseis smiled gratefully and led the way.

*****

When Sinbad and his companions entered Briseis, they were surprised to be met by a young boy of about ten, who called Sinbad by name.

"My name it Talos," he told them. "My sister sent me to get you. She's with your lady friend, Maeve."

"Lead on then, Talos," Sinbad told the boy. He and the others were led to an impressively large stone home, and greeted as honored guests by the owner....Phem.

Briseis' Father smiled at Sinbad and shook his hand. "There is food and wine, gentlemen," he said, gesturing to a nearby table. "Please to help yourselves."

Sinbad thanked him. "Where is Maeve?" he asked.

"In the garden, with my daughter," Phem replied. He took Sinbad's arm and led him over to the terrace. "Follow the path to the fountain," he instructed.

"Thank you," Sinbad replied. "Doubar...I'll be back," he announced.

Doubar's mouth was stuffed full of cheese so he merely waved at Sinbad.

*****

Maeve and Briseis were sitting at the fountain when Maeve caught sight of Sinbad approaching. She tapped Briseis' arm. "There he is," she said.

Briseis turned and her breath caught in her chest as she beheld the man walking towards them. Maeve had said that he was brave and noble, but had forgotten to mention...gorgeous. Briseis leaned towards Maeve. "He's so young," she whispered.

"Aye," Maeve agreed.

"And beautiful," Briseis said softly. "You forgot to mention that."

Maeve felt herself flush. "Oh...did I?" She knew better than to claim not to be aware Sinbad's good looks. Briseis would never believe her.

Sinbad reached the two women and noticed that Maeve's fair skin was flushed. "Maeve...are you feeling all right?" he questioned with concern.

"I'm fine, Sinbad," she said firmly. Maeve pointed to her companion. "This is Briseis. I met her just outside of town."

Briseis clucked her tongue at such nonsense, then smiled at Sinbad. "Maeve saved me from two horrible men," she declared. "She was wonderful."

"That she is," Sinbad replied, smiling at the sorceress.

Maeve felt herself blush even deeper. "Sinbad, Briseis and her Father have invited us to stay with them while we're in Menos. Oh...and I asked her about Rhenee." Maeve's expression darkened. "It seems that she passed away two years ago."

Sinbad was sorry to hear that. "The Caliph will be saddened by the news," he said, regretfully.

Briseis reached for his hand and squeezed it gently. "Please tell you friend that Rhenee went peacefully, in her sleep."

"Thank you, Briseis," Sinbad replied. "I will tell him that. And I wish to thank you, and your Father, for your generous invitation. But...I'm afraid that we would be too much of an imposition."

"Nonsense!" exclaimed a deep voice from behind them. Phem stepped forward, a smile on his face. He shook a finger at Sinbad. "I insist that you stay, Captain. We have plenty of room. And, to be honest, I would enjoy the company."

Briseis tugged on Sinbad's hand to garner his attention. "I would enjoy the company as well," she told him, her eyes glowing softly.

Maeve noticed the look that Briseis gave Sinbad and it curled her stomach. She shouldn't be jealous..yet she was. "Sinbad is right," she said bluntly. And was more than a little surprised at herself for doing so. "It's a lovely offer, but --"

"I think we should stay," Sinbad replied, cutting Maeve off. He smiled at the sorceress, then turned to Phem. "We accept your kind offer, but on one condition."

Phem was intrigued. "And that being?"

Sinbad grinned at him. "That we pull our own weight around here, so as not to be a burden on you...or your servants."

"Agreed," Phem said happily. He took Sinbad by the arm. "Come, we have a veritable feast waiting and you must be famished."

Briseis and Maeve were both silent as they watched the men walk off. Then Briseis smiled at the red-haired woman. "Sinbad seems very sweet," she declared, unaware of the silly smile on her face.

Maeve grimaced. "Be careful, Briseis," she warned.

"What do you mean?" the other woman countered, a frown furrowing her brow.

"Sinbad is a sailor," Maeve replied shortly. "He won't stay landlocked for long."

Briseis gave a soft, womanly, smile. "Perhaps," she allowed. "Then again....one never knows."

Maeve shook her hair back then stood up. "I think I'll go for a walk," she announced, unclipping her gauntlet and calling for Dermott. She really liked Briseis, but she wasn't prepared to watch her flirt with Sinbad. Not that other women didn't. But for some reason, Maeve had the feeling that Sinbad might actually flirt back with this one. And the thought left her feeling restless and irritated. So it would be best if she walked it off. With Dermott perched on her arm, Maeve strode off.

*****

After sundown Sinbad and his companions gathered around a low fire to listen to Briseis sing. They applauded her sincerely when she had finished, for her voice was truly beautiful. Briseis was flushed by their praise, yet smiling as she sat down beside Sinbad.

Maeve noticed and tried not to let it bother her. She wasn't very successful. To Sinbad's credit, he didn't seem to notice that Briseis was practically sitting on his lap.

Phem was explaining the plans that he had for them on the morrow. "It's most exciting," he said, clapping his hands together enthusiastically. Then he frowned. "Of course, it would be even more exciting if we were represented. But...no matter."

"Wait a minute.." Sinbad held up one hand. "I'm afraid I'm not following you. Represented in what?"

Briseis explained. "Every year the King and Queen of Theanopoulos sponser a competition for women. A sporting event, if you will. Each of the fifteen neighboring towns sends a representative, and the winner...that is the town....receives a chest full of riches."

Firouz was intrigued. "That's very modern," he commented. "I'm surprised that the King and Queen would sponsor a women's competition."

Maeve was rather insulted by his statement. "Why is that so surprising?" she challenged.

"Well...to be honest, Maeve," Firouz broke off and grimaced, knowing that the sorceress wouldn't like what he had to say. "It's just that very few..people...are open minded enough to consider such a thing."

"And by *people* you're referring to MEN?" Maeve shot back. Firouz nodded. What else could he do? He looked over at Sinbad for assistance.

Sinbad shook his head and laughed. "I'm not getting into the middle of this one, my friend," he said firmly. "You're on your own, Firouz."

Maeve decided to let the inventor off the hook. She knew that he didn't feel the same way as most men. "Never mind, Firouz," she told him. Then she turned her attention to Phem. "You said that Menos wasn't represented. Mind if I ask why?"

Phem sighed. "The young woman who was to represent us broke her ankle two days ago. And there is no one else capable to take her place. You see, she had been training all year for this competition."

Sinbad was curious. "What kind of training?" he inquired. "What's involved in the competition?"

Briseis smiled at him. "There are four events. Wrestling, running, archery and sword fighting."

Maeve was surprised. "That's all?" She shrugged. "I could do that." She looked at Phem. "If it's not against the rules, and it's all right with Captain Sinbad, I would be willing to compete for you," Maeve told him.

Phem was delighted. "You would do that for us?" he countered. "You would represent Menos?"

"I think it would be fun," Maeve confessed. She couldn't help but smile in the face of Phem's excitement. Turning to Sinbad she asked, "Is it all right with you?"

Sinbad nodded. "If you're sure you want to do it," he told her.

Maeve smiled. "I'm very sure."

"Then I look forward to it," Sinbad replied. He knew that Maeve was skilled with a sword, as well as a bow and arrow. And she could run like the wind. As for wrestling...well...Sinbad had seen her take down men twice her size. He had no doubt that Menos would be well represented. "When do we leave for Theanapoulos?" he asked his host.

Phem laughed then said, "At first light."

*****

It took less than two hours to reach Theanapoulos. The Kingdom was vast, even with the townspeople lolling about. And they had come in droves to view the competition.

Sinbad was impressed. "Quite the turn out," he commented.

Briseis nodded. "Oh yes. The competition has been going on for nearly fifteen years. And it's quite exciting..

Maeve was beginning to get caught up in it herself. She saw a group of women off to one side, bending and stretching and the like. She pointed to them and asked, "Are those some of the other contestants?"

"Yes," Phem told her. Then he took her arm. "Come...we must sign you up." He and Maeve strode off with Briseis and her brother running to catch up.

Sinbad and the others lagged behind them. They found the sights and sounds most interesting. Especially the sights. The women who were working out wore skimpy outfits that revealed their smooth skin and lean muscles. Doubar and Firouz were both impressed, but for different reasons.

Firouz studied the women scientifically, muscle group by muscle group. Doubar, on the other hand, appreciated the whole picture. Sinbad laughed at them both, then joined Rongar who was smiling at a dark-skinned beauty.

"Hello, pretty one," said a husky, female voice from behind Sinbad. He figured she was talking to somebody next to him so didn't respond. A moment later, however, he let out a squawk of surprise when a hand cupped his behind.

Sinbad spun around and glared at the tall, blond woman who smiled at him. "Excuse me!" he snapped.

She laughed as she let her eyes glide over him slowly. "Indeed you are a pretty one," she said boldly. "What's your name?"

"I...." Sinbad was so stunned by her aggressiveness, that he found it difficult to speak. "Uh...."

"No matter," said the blond. "My name is Lycoris. I'm the champion of the King and Queen. After I win the competition...I'll claim you as my personal prize, pretty one. It matters not to me if you can speak."

Sinbad found himself retreating as she bore down upon him. He was accustomed to strong, independent women...like Maeve and Talia...but this woman was downright arrogant and insulting. "Just wait a minute," Sinbad countered, raising his hands to ward her off.

But Lycoris would not be stayed. She backed her prey against a tree then grabbed handfuls of his hair. Just as she was about to kiss him, Lycoris felt a hand in her own hair and she was pulled away. She turned to glare at a beautiful, redhaired woman.

Maeve scowled. "Sinbad...I thought I told you not to play with strays. You don't know where they've been," she drawled.

The insult hit Lycoris like a slap in the face. "Why you little --" she began. She launched herself at the other woman only to stop at the sound of her name being shouted. Turning, she fell to one knee before the man and woman who approached. "Your Majesty's," she said.

Sinbad and Maeve bowed their heads as well.

King Kostas stepped between Lycoris and Maeve. "Come now, ladies. Save your energy for the competition," he advised.

Queen Ileana was eyeing Sinbad, and she smiled. "I can understand why you ladies would wish to fight over this man. He is exquisite." She laughed as Sinbad flushed scarlet with embarrassment, then continued. "But listen to your King, you must be strong and ready to represent your...town."

Maeve glared at Lycoris, then stepped forward to take Sinbad by the arm. With a toss of her fiery tresses, she dragged the Captain away with her.

Sinbad allowed it, until they were out of view, then he dug in his heels and pulled away. "I guess I owe you my thanks, Maeve," he drawled.

"Keep your thanks, Sinbad!" she spat. "Just stay away from that Bimbo!" And so saying, Maeve stomped off.

Leaving Sinbad shaking his head. "Women..." he muttered. Then he wandered off to find his crew.

*****

Two hours later the opening ceremonies began. The King and Queen took their places on a covered dais, then the King announced that this year each town had a representative, which should make things interesting. He then explained that there would be four events, the first even being wrestling. Because there were fifteen women, the King's champion...Lycoris...who had won the competition for the past three years running, would not be in the first match. The other competitors would be divided into seven pairs.

Sinbad and his crew stood near the arena where the competition would take place. Maeve was already out there, standing next to the woman she was to wrestle. Sinbad looked at Doubar and smiled. "Maeve should win this easily," he announced.

Doubar nodded as he studied the sorceress. "She looks itching for a fight," he noted. "I wonder what's got her so riled up?"

"Gee...I can't imagine," Sinbad replied, although he could guess. He had no desire for Doubar to learn about his confrontation with Lycoris. Not that is was going to be easy to avoid, for the blond woman was staring at him from her position just below the King and Queen's dais.

"Whatever has Maeve worked up," Doubar was saying, "Woe to her opponents, for they're going to feel the fallout."

King Kostas raised his royal staff and shouted "Let the games BEGIN!"

At the end of the first round there were seven winners, of which Maeve was one. For the second round, Lycoris joined in. Then there were four competitors left. The winners of that round were Lycoris and Maeve.

Sinbad felt knots twist in his stomach as he watched Maeve and the blond woman match off. Maeve was built like an amazon, but she seemed almost delicate when compared to Lycoris' bulk. Sinbad had found himself looking up to the blond, and he had little doubt that she weighed more than he did. "Careful Maeve," he whispered.

Maeve faced Lycoris without fear. Lycoris smiled at the other woman. "That pretty one," she drawled. "Sinbad, I believe you called him. Is he yours?"

"What if he is?" Maeve shot back, as she and Lycoris circled each other.

Lycoris grinned. "He won't be for long," she taunted, then she launched herself forward.

Maeve sidestepped the rush and stuck out her foot. She smiled when Lycoris thudded to the ground, but her smile vanished when she found herself yanked off her feet. Maeve landed on her back and felt her breath whoosh out of her lungs. A moment later she felt Lycoris heavy weight upon her and the match was called. Lycoris was the victor.

Sinbad and the others groaned. Sinbad was about to run out onto the field when Doubar grabbed his arm. "I want to make sure that Maeve's all right," Sinbad protested, as he tried to pry off his brother's hand.

Doubar shook his head. "Leave her be, little brother. Maeve will be fine." He locked eyes with Sinbad and sent a silent message.

"Oh..." Sinbad said, as he received it. He nodded. "You're right, Doubar. Maeve will be fine." Had he run to her, she would have been furious. Instead of appreciating Sinbad's concern for her, he knew she would have been insulted. And rightly so. After all, pride was not limited to men. Sinbad was surprised at himself for not realizing that on his own. "What's the next competition?" he asked Briseis, who was standing beside him.

"The foot race," she told him.

Phem tapped Sinbad's shoulder. "I hope Maeve is a fast runner," he commented.

Sinbad nodded. "She runs like the wind."

Firouz was curious. "Exactly how is a winner declared? I mean...Lycoris won this event, but what if she loses the next one? Or there's a tie at the end? Or...a different competitor wins each of the four events?"

"Well..." Phem smiled then attempted to explain. "First off, that's never happened yet in all the fifteen years of the competition. And Lycoris has won all the events the past four years running. Although five years ago there was a tie. The King decides the tie breaker."

"Which was what?" Firouz inquired. Only to be cut off by the King's pronouncement of the second event.

Doubar frowned. "The contestants don't get much of a rest period," he said.

Briseis nodded. "The King feels it's more...interesting...this way," she explained.

Sinbad snorted. "I don't think I like your King much," he countered. "There's something about him that rubs me the wrong way."

Doubar was surprised. "And just when did you have the pleasure of meeting his majesty?"

"Uh..." Sinbad grimaced as he realized his mistake. "I just happened to run into him before the competition started," he replied hastily. "Him and his Queen." Sinbad pointed. "Look, the runners are lining up." And with those words he ran off to find a good position from where to watch the race.

Maeve was several paces away from Lycoris at the starting line, but she and the other woman glared at each other. No matter what, Maeve was determined to beat her this time. She glanced over her shoulder and saw Sinbad and the others waving at her. She waved back, and then the King shouted..."BEGIN!"

Sinbad saw Maeve leap ahead of the other contestants and he felt his heart skip a beat. She was going to win this won, he could just feel it. But a moment later he groaned, when Lycoris caught up to Maeve. The two women ran side by side. "Come on, Maeve!" Sinbad shouted. "You can do it!"

As the finish line appeared, Maeve put on an extra burst of speed, but it wasn't enough for Lycoris pulled up with her again, and the two women crossed the line at the same time.

"NO!" Sinbad cried out in frustration. He looked over at Phem. "They tied. Now what happens?"

Phem bit his lip. "They will have to run the obstacle course to determine the winner," he replied.

Doubar shook his head. "Why is it I've got a bad feeling about it?"

Briseis sighed. "It's a difficult course," she said, confirming Doubar's suspicions. "Very rugged terrain."

Sinbad didn't like the sound of that and was about to say so when King Kostas announced that the obstacle course event would begin immediately in order to determine a winner. "That's not fair!" Sinbad exclaimed. "They should be allowed a rest period."

"King's competition, King's rule," Phem countered. He took Sinbad's arm. "Come, we'll wait at the end of the course."

Maeve stood with Lycoris at the base of a valley gorge. The boundaries of the course were clearly marked, and her adrenaline was pumping. She was rather looking forward to this race. When the King shouted she took off like the wind.

Lycoris followed close behind. She knew the course well, so she allowed Maeve to lead. No matter to her if the other woman got a little cocky. More the better for when she took the fall. And fall she would.

After climbing a hillside using a vine to pull herself up, Maeve glanced behind her. Lycoris was closing in. Fast. Maeve pushed herself forward, running the narrow path that skidded on the edge of a steep incline. She moved with confidence, feeling sure footed, but a moment later she felt an elbow in her back and she was falling down the incline. Maeve caught herself and managed to gain her feet, but her momentum sent her downward and she felt her ankle twist beneath her. With a cry of pain, Maeve fell to the ground and tumbled head over heels to the bottom.

Sinbad and the others saw Maeve fall, and this time Sinbad ran to her. He was there just a moment after she hit bottom. MAEVE!" he cried, falling to his knees next to her.

She managed to smile at him, despite the pain in her ankle, and various other aches and pains. "I'm all right, Sinbad," she told him. She allowed him to pull her to her feet, but she cried out and almost fell when she put her weight on her ankle.

"Maeve!" Sinbad caught her and lifted her into his arms. "What's wrong?" he asked.

"I twisted my ankle," she said, grimacing in pain. "Lycoris pushed me!" she spat, just as Doubar and the others joined them.

"Are you sure about that?" Doubar questioned.

Maeve nodded. "Positive."

Phem understood her anger, but he shook his head. "Doesn't matter," he told her, "King's rules for the obstacle course is that there are no rules. Anything is fair."

Firouz was examining Maeve's ankle. It was swollen and bruising already. "The King didn't say that before they began," he commented.

"Everyone else knew," Phem replied. "I'm afraid there's nothing to be done about it now."

Sinbad swallowed his anger. His main concern was Maeve. "Let's get you back to the arena," he said. Turning from his companions, he carried Maeve off.

*****

In one of the tents, Firouz applied ice to Maeve's ankle. Sinbad paced and Briseis wrung her hands as she stood beside Maeve. "Do you think you'll be able to compete, Maeve?" she asked.

Maeve frowned at her. "No." She was surprised that Briseis even had to ask. It was obvious to anyone that looked at her ankle that she wouldn't be able to stand.

Briseis blinked back tears as she looked at her Father. "Then all is lost!" she wailed.

Sinbad was surprised by her behavior, and suspicion began to nibble at him. He confronted Phem. "What is she talking about?" he demanded.

Phem found it hard to meet Sinbad's eyes. "I suppose we should have told you this before."

"Told us what?" Maeve prompted.

"That the competition is not merely fun and games," Phem replied. "Or even a chance to win the treasure chest."

Doubar stepped in Phem's face. "Then what, exactly, is it?" he growled.

Briseis answered. "It's our lives," she pronounced.

Sinbad frowned at her. "I don't understand."

"It's very simple," Briseis told him. "The King and Queen own our town. They own and control Menos and all the neighboring towns. But once a year they allow each of us the chance to win back our freedom."

Doubar glared at her through narrowed eyes. "This competition," he guessed.

Sinbad was still confused. "I think you'd better start from the beginning," he advised.

So Briseis did. "Every year each town sends a representative to the games. If you don't send someone your town is forfeit."

"Meaning what?" Maeve interjected.

"Meaning that everyone in it is sold into slavery, and the town is annihilated." Briseis looked at Maeve with tear filled eyes. "That's what will happen now because we have to forfeit."

Sinbad shook his head. "How can the King do that?" he countered. "Fight back. Don't let him take your town away from you."

Phem gave a bark of laughter. "It's way too late for that, Sinbad. The King and Queen already own all the towns. All the riches that you saw in our home, they belong to them. He allows us to live there, to pretend at having lives worth living. If we win the games then our town is freed from his tyranny."

"But what about all the towns that will lose?" Doubar asked.

Briseis wiped her eyes and said, "They will go back to the same way of life and hope to try again next year. But no one has been freed in four years. Lycoris always wins." Briseis looked at Maeve. "I had hoped that you would be the one to save us."

Maeve didn't know what to say. She felt sorrow for Briseis for the way they were forced to live, but she was angry as well. "You should have told us this in the beginning," she said coldly.

"I know." Briseis bowed her head. "Forgive me."

"Forget it," Maeve replied. She felt too weary to hold on to her anger.

Just then a trumpet sounded. Phem turned pale. "The King is calling for the games to commence," he told them. "We will have to accept the forfeit." He looked at his daughter and son. "Tonight we will be sent to Gaza and sold into slavery."

Sinbad couldn't accept that. Not without some kind of a fight. "I'm going to go talk to the King," he declared, then he headed out of the tent.

Doubar scooped Maeve up into his arms then he and the others followed.

King Kostas was just about to announce Menos' forfeit, when he saw Sinbad striding over to him. "And what can I do for you, Sailor?" he drawled.

"I want you to give Menos a chance to find another representative," Sinbad declared.

Queen Ileana smiled at him. "We're willing to do that. But...I don't believe they have one."

Lycoris was standing beside the King, and now she stepped forward, her eyes glued to Sinbad. "I think we should allow this one to compete," she stated.

"What!" the King bellowed. "This competition is for women!"

The Queen looked at Lycoris. "Are you sure you want to do that?" she asked. "He looks quite...strong..and agile, Lycoris."

Lycoris grinned. "Yes..I know. I love a challenge." She stepped toward Sinbad who was shaking his head. "Unless, of course, the pretty one is afraid?" she drawled.

Sinbad felt a slow burn and his eyes flashed fire at Lycoris. "I'm not afraid of you," he spat. "But...as your King said..this competition is for women."

King Kostas was amused by the idea. "I made the rules," he said, "So I can change them if I wish. So be it. I declare Sinbad to be the representative for Menos."

Maeve and the others stared at each other in disbelief. But Briseis and her Father were thrilled.

Sinbad looked at them and made his decision. "Agreed. Let's do it."

Lycoris was pleased. "How about we make a little wager, Sinbad? Feeling daring?"

"Name it." Sinbad shot back.

"If I win the games, you spend the night with me," Lycoris replied.

Sinbad swallowed the lump that formed in his throat, but nodded. "Fine. But if I win, you play servant for the village of Menos for a day."

Lycoris laughed at his audacity, for she had no doubt that she would be the victor. "Done," she declared.

King Kostas stood up. "The third event is archery. Contestants, take your places!"

Sinbad went to his companions first. He checked on Maeve then turned to Briseis. "I'll do my best to win," he told her. "But I've got a feeling, it's not going to be easy."

His feeling turned out to be right. All the women were excellent archers. But, in the end, Sinbad proved victorious. So, technically, Lycoris had won two events to his one. Sinbad had to win the sword fight in order to tie. In which case, King Kostas would chose the tie breaking event. Sinbad shuddered to think what it might be. But he didn't have much time worry about it, for the fourth event was begun.

Using his sword against a woman was difficult for Sinbad, and he found himself pulling back, even though his opponents had no such compunction. And they were all excellent swordswomen. Still, Sinbad managed to best them, until there was only himself and Lycoris left. As if he hadn't expected that.

Lycoris smiled at Sinbad as she hefted her broadsword. "Don't worry, pretty one. I won't hurt you...much. I want you able to perform later."

"I'll remember that," Sinbad replied as he forced back a shudder. Then he found himself retreating as Lycoris attacked. She was amazingly strong, and as Sinbad repeatedly deflected her blows, he felt his hand grow numb. So he decided it was time to take the offensive. With a battle cry, Sinbad flipped Lycoris' blade away and launched his own attack. And so it continued, while those who watched did so with baited breath.

Doubar whispered to Maeve, "That woman is good. Real good."

Maeve sighed. "I know. But Sinbad could beat if he'd just stop being a gentleman. He's holding back."

"He can't help himself," Doubar countered, in Sinbad's defense.

"Men..." Maeve muttered, then she refocused her attention on the fight.

Sinbad knew that Lycoris was using his own reluctance to fight full out against him, but he had a few tricks up his sleeve. Such as a simple little move that he had learned in Nipan. Sinbad flipped his blade so that the hilt was upright, then he deflected Lycoris' next strike. By twisting his wrist and shoving forward he was able to deflect her blade as well as knock her off balance. Sinbad then tapped the back of her knee with the toe of his boot and Lycoris fell to her back. Smiling, Sinbad held the point of his blade over her throat. "Guess I win," he drawled.

Lycoris was furious. She had never been bested before, and she would never allow a man to be the one to defeat her. Her fingers curled in the sand as she glared up at Sinbad. "Not yet!" she shouted, then she flung sand in Sinbad's face.

He cried out as the grains of sand stung his eyes. He dropped his sword as he blinked through blurred vision. A moment later he felt his feet kicked out from under him and a sword point at his throat. He heard Lycoris laugh....but he couldn't see her.

"I WIN!" she shouted triumphantly.

"She cheats!" Maeve cried out. As did Doubar, and several others from the crowd of onlookers.

The King stood up. "Lycoris wins!" he declared.

That was all Sinbad needed to hear. He couldn't see clearly, but he sensed where Lycoris was standing. He grabbed her leg and yanked her off her feet. A smile curved his lips as he heard her cry out when she hit the ground. Sinbad felt for his sword, found it, the pressed the curved blade to her throat. His vision was beginning to clear and he wiped his eyes with his sleeve. "Look again, King!" he shouted. "I believe I am the winner!"

The King and Queen were dismayed when the crowds burst into cheers. He signaled his soldiers. "Grab Sinbad and his men!"

Doubar realized what was happening, so he drew his scimiter. As did Firouz and Maeve. But Sinbad had his own idea. He pulled Lycoris to her feet and walked her towards the dais..his sword never leaving her throat. "Call off your men, sire!" he shouted. "Or she dies!" Sinbad felt Lycoris stiffen in his arms.

King Kostas laughed. "So be it!"

Sinbad whispered to Lycoris. "Hmmm...Your King doesn't seem to appreciate your loyalty."

That was all Lycoris needed to hear. She broke away from Sinbad and lunged for King Kostas, tossing aside guards left and right. Grabbing the King's ceremonial dagger, Lycoris held it to his throat. "Call off your guards or you die!" she snarled.

King Kostas was no fool. He knew that Lycoris could, and would, kill him. So he called off his men. Swallowing hard he asked, "Now what?"

Lycoris grinned. "Pronounce Sinbad the winner of the games, and free Menos," she said.

Sinbad listened with a smile of satisfaction as King Menos did so. Then he stepped forward to make his own announcement. "Going by the King's own rules, I declare that he and his Queen, along with the rest of their loyal subjects, be dispatched to Gaza to be sold into slavery."

This pronouncement brought about a cheer, and a cry. The King was horrified. "You can't do that!" he shouted.

"Sure I can," Sinbad told him. "You made the rules, Sire. Now you have to live by them." He turned to address the onlookers. "The Kingdom of Theanapoulus will be no more. Nor will these games. You are all free now. You must chose your own ruler, and live your own lives."

The towns people surged forward, and disarmed the King's soldiers. They then marched them off the field. They were fearless now that they felt they had control of their lives back.

Briseis and her Father ran to Sinbad and embraced him. Maeve and the others were not far behind. Even Lycoris came forward to thank him.

Sinbad stared at her in surprise. "I don't understand," he admitted.

Lycoris shrugged. "Me either. But...I feel as if you have freed me as well. And I will keep our bet, pretty one." She laughed as she watched Sinbad blush. "I will play servant for your friends for a day." Lycoris looked at Phem, then turned to Maeve. "You are a worthy competitor," she said.

Maeve was stunned. She stared at the hand that Lycoris held out to her, then reached out and took it. "Uh...thanks," she murmured.

Doubar came over to Sinbad and clapped him on the back. "Little brother, you and Maeve should be proud of what you've accomplished here today," he stated, matter-of-factedly.

Sinbad looked at Maeve. "I am," he said softly.

Maeve felt herself flush from the heat of Sinbad's look, but she smiled at him and whispered, "So am I."

*****

The towns people threw a gala celebration for Sinbad and his crew. There was wine, woman, song and dance...and various other entertainment.

Maeve was seated on oversized pillows beneath a striped awning, and Sinbad wandered over and sat down beside her. "How's your ankle, Maeve?" he asked.

She shrugged. "Still sore, but Firouz said I should be able to walk on it again within a week." She noticed Sinbad grimace as he shifted himself into a comfortable position. "Are you all right?"

"I'm fine," Sinbad told her. "Just a little sore." He grinned. "Lycoris hits hard," Sinbad confessed.

"I know," Maeve countered with a laugh. She took Sinbad by the shoulders to shift him around. "Turn your back to me," she ordered.

Sinbad frowned, "Why?"

Maeve rolled her eyes. "Just do it." When Sinbad had obeyed, she let her fingers press into his shoulder muscles, gently kneading. "How does that feel?"

"Ummmmm..." Sinbad sighed with pleasure. "Wonderful." He let himself enjoy it for a moment, then said, "I'm really proud of you, Maeve." Sinbad turned around to face her. "I just wanted you to know that."

"Thank you," Maeve replied, as her eyes stared deep into Sinbad's. It was like staring into the blue of the sea. "I'm....I'm really proud of you too."

Sinbad smiled then found that he was leaning forward. As was Maeve. Their lips were but a breath apart when they heard the sound of laughter. Doubar's laughter.

"Little brother!" Doubar shouted.

"Doubar!" Sinbad jumped to his feet, cursing the flush that suffused his face, and knowing that his brother and Firouz, who was with him, both saw it. Sinbad looked at Maeve. "Uh...I'll go get those strawberries you wanted," he said, needing some excuse to escape.

Maeve frowned at him. "What straw..." She broke off as realization dawned. Then she smiled at him and nodded. "Oh...those strawberries." Maeve looked at Doubar and Firouz. "I asked Sinbad to get me some strawberries," she told them.

Sinbad nearly groaned at how obvious Maeve was being, but instead he turned on his heel and ran off.

Firouz looked at Doubar then moved to the bowl that was sitting on a tray beside Maeve. It was filled with strawberries. Firouz took one and bit into it, then he offered one to Maeve, who buried her face in her hands in embarrassment.

Doubar laughed until his sides ached.
