SCARFACE

Review by Steve Simels

SCARFACE Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer (1983, MCA/Universal, R, $129.98) Director Brian De Palma's ultragory update of the old Paul Muni gangster flick has been beautifully remastered here, and, for what it's worth, it looks and sounds great; if you like explosions, bad accents, fake blood, and a ludicrously miscast Pacino as a Cuban psycho, then this is the laserdisc for you. But the only news here is a concluding documentary, in which De Palma, Pacino, and screenwriter Oliver Stone wax nostalgic about the making of the movie; all hail it as a classic, and yet-- astonishingly--none of their noses grow. Sorry, guys, no matter how you dress it up, Scarface still looks like an Ed Wood movie with a big budget. C
