A big ear for "Satiemania"

Cartoon "Satiemania" now with a new, refreshed sound

07. June 1999 -- Twenty years ago, Zdenko Gasparovic of Zagreb film, made a 10 minute cartoon that become a legend of the famous Zagreb's school of animated film. But years have passed away and when a cartoon was brought to daylight from storage, people in ZF realized that the sound was awful. The sound recorded by famous Mladen Prebyl and Miljenko Doerr wasn't very good in the start. Not because of the two above mentioned gentlemen, who were the masters in their job, but because poor quality of the music. It came from the very old record, full of dust, scratches and noise. Add a very old turntable, very old telecine compressors with a poor set-up, noise from optical pick-up, and there you are. Can you hear a thing? And a music from the record is 99% of the soundtrack.

So, what you can do? To record everything from the start? Yeah, but the author is in America, the pianist is dead, the record is on the dump...And what about the new CD? OK. But do you know from which parts of the concert the director took the music? Is it the same artist, same recording? And synchronization? The original soundtrack was made on a sprocket tape, with 24 fps. Now it is on a Betacam SP cassette, running with 25 fps. So what can you do?

Well, you can shoot yourself or find a company that can perform a sound restoration, on a digital equipment. Some like Digital Magic, e.g. AVC. So they did it. How they did it, you can find on their web pages. And a result? Better and cheaper than ever expected.
