During the opening credits, the time period is set. In Phil's bar, Phil and a helper are taking down Christmas decorations and putting up New Years decorations. His assistant is a klutz, he broke many glasses in the bar. Then, time passes a little and it is lunch time that same day. Jim, Miles, and Frank are at the table. Murphy enters. She heard that Corky is having a New Year's party and inviting her co-workers. Murphy has excuses for them, so they don't have to go. Doris is sick, Frank's new girlfriend has put on a lot of weight and doesn't want to be seen in public. But they tell her that the want to go. They remember past New Year's Eves and how much fun they were. But Murphy reminds them that on those years she was drunk and this year she's sober. She calls New Year's amateur night and says that pros like her didn't need a special day for drinking. Corky comes and invites Murphy to the party. Corky's cooking the food herself and they get to watch Heidi on video. Murphy declines, saying that the man she's been seeing has put on a lot of weight and is embarrassed to be seen in public.... But everyone is going, so Murphy gives in and decides to go as well.
The party is dull. It looks like a funeral. Murphy and Frank are entering together. people think that since Murphy came, the party will be a bit more exciting.... But she's sober this year. Corky introduces her date: Dr. Noel Gardner. He works at a Bethesda Hospital, but will soon be opening his own practice. It will be general medicine.... He tells Frank to come so he can get a mole checked out and asks Murphy when the last time she had a mammogram was? Frank asks for a beer but Corky says that there's no alcohol at the party. Then she decides to explain to people why. She says it's a dry party because of Murphy. "We all know she's a drunk." She says. Corky just didn't want to tempt her.
Jim and Doris enter in black-tie. They explain. They met on New Year's Eve in 1961. They brought some liquor, but Corky gives it to the party next door. (She did that with any alcohol brought to the party.)
At 8:45, Miles and Audrey are at the door of her apartment. Audrey is still putting on her makeup. Audrey was Miles' last minute date. He invited her 45 minutes ago. It's their second time out since the blind date four months ago. Miles, trying to cover up, says that that date was just so powerful. He had to absorb it. Miles tells Audrey that his co-workers don't have to know it only their second date..... Miles and Audrey enter the apartment. Audrey tells Corky that she and Miles have been seeing each other since the Princess of Wales introduced them at Wimbleton last year. Miles drinks some of the punch. He thinks it has a lot of rum in it. So he acts drunk. Frank was going to tell him that there is no alcohol in it, but Murphy stops him. She tells him to shut up -- it's something to do.
Miles has his tie around his head and is singing "I'm So Excited." He is saying something to Corky, but calls her Corkster and Cork-O. (This part is hard to describe because I don't remember why he was saying her name... my notes don't say.) Murphy begs Frank to get to be the one to tell him. And she does.
Now they are going to play a game that Noel brought. It's called "How Long Will You
Live?" You start at age 72 and depending how you answer questions, you go up or down
years.
Jm got 72, Doris got 74. Corky got 80. Frank got 52. Murphy got 97. Frank asks to see
her paper... She lied on questions and skipped questions.....
The countdown for New Years: Frank is complaining that its just another year closer to death. At about 12:01 Murphy wants to leave. Corky wants them to do New Years resolutions.
Murphy gets back to the townhouse and sees Eldin and Felicia watching TV and drinking champagne. They leave, but there's still some champagne in the bottle. This is early Murphy at her strongest, still trying to overcome her addiction: She can't ignore it, the drink is so tempting. But she stays strong. She dumps the champagne into the flowerpot. Eldin enters. He wanted to make sure Murphy didn't drink the champagne. She tells him its okay. Murphy is strong. She didn't.
