And the Whiner Is...

This is another early episode. It is a second season, and the very first Humboldt episode. The opening credits show the Humboldt top to bottom. There is a Motown song playing in the background.... The show opens at the office. Jim is writing material for the Humboldts (he will be hosting the awards). The nominations come out today. Frank is depressed... For the ninth year in a row he'll be nominated, and for the ninth year in a row, he'll lose to Murphy. Miles enters: he has the nominations.

Nominations for Outstanding Broadcast News Reporting
Dan Rather: The Student Uprising at Tienanmen Square
Mike Wallace: A Sad Day for the FBI
Murphy Brown: Jesse Jackson, The Man Behind the Rainbow
Frank Fontana: The Exxon Valdez, Journey to Disaster
Corky Sherwood: A Woman's Touch at West Point

Frank doesn't think he's even going to go... He'd need to get a tuxedo, a date... his complaints go on and on... Murphy says he can be her date. Frank is going. Corky can't believe she got a nomination. She is VERY excited. She really wants to win. She says she knows she's not supposed to say that, but she really does want to win.

At the Humboldts:
Jim is dying. His jokes don't go over very well. Miles says that if someone from FYI wins, he just wants them to say his name. Jim gets to the nominations. And.....
CORKY WINS!
Everyone does a spit take and Corky screams. She gets a Humboldt! She thanks her teachers, friends, parents, Frank, Jim, Scott, Ernie, Carl... The list goes on and on. Then she thanks Murphy (saying the first time she saw her, Corky couldn't have been more than 8 or 9.) But Corky forgets to thank Miles!!

The Next Day at FYI:
Corky enters humming the theme from Rocky and waving the Humboldt. She puts it in the middle of the table (as an inspiration to her co-workers), but when Frank is about to touch it she yells at him saying she just polished it. Murphy has an idea for a story. She'd like to report about the Brady Bill. Miles gives the story to Corky, and Murphy objects and gets mad. She asks to talk to him in her office. Miles is afraid. Murphy demands to know why he gave Corky Murphy's story. She threatens to "get out her rubber bands and paperclips and straighten [Miles'] teeth." Miles says the network wants Corky to lead because of her Humboldt. Corky enters and complains that her office and furniture are not as nice as Murphy's...

On Show night:
Corky is waiting for his agent. He is stopping by to visit her. Frank wonders what type of car Corky is going to get. She has no idea what he's talking about. Frank explains that Murphy got her car when she won the Humboldt. But she hasn't heard anything about a free car....
Corky's agent comes. His name is Al Floss. He does not realize that Miles is the executive producer and also introduces himself to the rest of the FYI cast. He wants to become their agent. He forgets, however, that Frank is also his client. Al wants Miles to re-arrange the seating, so that Corky has a better spot and he feels it will look better. Murphy is getting completely ignored. Next week will be the week that Corky has the Brady Bill story.

At FYI another day:
It is approaching show night, Corky is getting extremely stressed out. She yells at the copy editor and basically everyone in the office. Miles offers to get her extra help but Corky doesn't want any. Corky is going (back to editing I believe) and passes Frank:

Frank: (Walking by) Antigua.
Corky: (Annoyed and stressed out) I don't speak Spanish, Frank, what do you want?
Frank: I'm just saying if it was up to me, I would pick Antigua.
Corky just stares at him. She has no idea what he's talking about.
Corky: What trip?
Frank looks towards Jim and Miles. Miles shakes his head no.
Frank: Uh-oh, me and my big mouth again!
Corky: Someone get my agent on the phone!

Miles want to ask Murphy to help Corky. Murphy is mad at Miles still. He apologizes to her and she intimidates him and stands nose to nose with him. She is actually slightly taller.

At Murphy's house:
Murphy is singing Motown and looking at her "B-list" trophies and awards. Murphy thinks that now people won't think of her triumphs, they'll just think that she's a loser. This idea really annoys her. There is a knock at the door and Eldin answers. It's Corky. Eldin offers to get them something to drink and Corky yells at him, but in her yelling says his name which made him very happy... Corky says she just spent eight hours in the editing room. She needs help. Murphy says that she is busy with her own story. Corky is down on her hands and knees begging. Murphy and Corky sit down on the couch. Corky says she wanted the award so bad. She thought it would make her feel qualified. Murphy knows that Corky has the Humboldt in her purse. Corky does and after a little coaxing, hands it over to Murphy.

Murphy: I'll hold this for you till you show me you can handle it.

Murphy says she'll help and meet Corky at the office in half an hour. Corky is very grateful.

Corky: You know, for a while there I thought, 'Now I've made it. I've caught up with Murphy.' Boy was I wrong. . . (In a sort of sing-song voice) But I'm gaining on you...

Corky leaves and Murphy takes Corky's Humboldt and pulls an award of her own out of the box. (I'd like to call it an Emmy, but I'm not exactally sure if it is. But it looked more like one of the "real life" TV awards than the Humboldt did). She stands the awards next to each other and compares them in height. The Humboldt is much smaller. Murphy is happy.

THE END!
