In very exciting day for me, I was given the email address of a man who was the props master on the set of Murphy Brown (given to me by another person who worked on the set). This was a job that I would have given anything to have, and Larry had it. He worked on the set all ten years, and here is what he has to say about his job:

What does a Propmaster do?
A Property Master is responsible for everything an actor touches or uses to act which includes toothpicks to battleships. When I receive a script (usually Friday night after the show) I take it home and break it down, meaning I highlight everything that I consider to be a prop and if we're supposed to be outside I must also think of the extras carrying shopping bags, umbrellas, briefcases, license plates for cars trucks and taxi's. Also the decals and the lights and meters for the cabs. Police cars need special attention also such as special plates, shotguns, light bars, antennas, if we see police officers I need those "stinkeen badges" guns, gun belts. All sorts of creative business to be going on in the background maybe some construction workers with tools in a man hole. These are things that might not be mentioned in the script. But the key is to be over prepared. We have a production meeting before every show to determine just how many people we'll need, how many extras should bring their own cars, how many cars det. This is all behind the scenes "stuff" now I have to deal with my actors who also have special business such as walking and talking with a hot dog or a drink or in a lot of cases hot coffee (I have to keep that coffee so hot you can see the steam!!!) Sometimes if the actors are walking through the park I'll get some birdseed and sprinkle it around the path they're walking. The birds will come down to eat and when the actors walk near the birds. They will all fly away in a pattern. Kind of a nice added look and it didn't cost a dime. Strollers for mothers, bicycles, a homeless man with a shopping cart loaded with his belongings and on and on depending on the script and what the story is all about gives me a vision. I usually have three of almost everything including helpers. They don't give us much time to dress the background. Each time we shoot a piece the actor leaves the prop wherever he or she took it so I have to keep my eyes on them at all times. Many years ago I had an actor leave the set without seeing him. He was a cop and left his gun (unloaded of course) in the restroom. Well, he forgot where he left it. My fault for not taking it before he left the set. I never did that again. Actors are notorious for forgetting props. They're working so hard on remembering their lines that they can't remember the other things that go along with the acting. That's where we come in!!!!!

What were the actors and actresses like in person?
As for the actors, all I can say at this time is they were all wonderful. Wonderful people and a wonderful family.
