They were
pageboy haircuts, just past shoulder length. They almost always curled their hair,
and there quite a few variations for the bangs. For the big rolls, they used things
called rats made of fabric of their own hair color that they rolled and then pinned in
place at the ends. Or, you can make the waves using bobby pins and lots of setting lotion,(shown
on the right) or you can pull back your bangs, fluff them up a bit, and clip them,
and then do the same to the other side.
Another way to make rolls is to save hair from
your own hairbrush and stuff them into a very sheer stocking, and sew it into a
sausage-like tube. This is also how Gibson Girls put their hair up in the 1800s...they
called these hair accoutrements "rats." The advantage of using the stocking
approach is that the rat shows less than a piece of cloth if your hair gets disturbed a
little bit.
