Domestic cats are mainly small,carnivorous animal.It is popular as a household pet and are certainly valuable in killing mice and rats.The tiger, lion , and leopard are the so called big cats.Like other members of the cat family, the domestic cat has retractile claws, keen hearing and smell, remarkable night vision and compact, muscular body.The body of a domestic cat is extremely flexible.Furthermore the cat's great leoping ability and speed are due to its powerful musculature.Its tail plays an important role in providing balance when it is jumping or falling.
Varieties of cats have been bred to retain their special characteristics and apperances. A purebred cat is one with parents of the same breed.Kittens of mixed parentage, however, are called crossbreeds or alleycats.
There are about 40 over breeds of domestic cats that are recognized internationally. The smallest cat weigh about 2 to 3 kg (about 5 to 7 lb) when full grown. On the other hand, the largest weigh about 7 to 9 kg (about 15 to 20 lb).The natural life span of a domestic cat is about 15 years.
The domestic cat usually reaches puberty at around nine or ten months of age.The gestation period of the cat is about 65 days; the average litter consist of 4 kittens, though it can reach up to six. Kittens are born blind, deaf and certainly helpless. Their eyes only open at 8 to 10 days of age, and they begin to weaned about 6 weeks after birth.
Eventhough cats are known for their ability to fend themselves in the wild, household pets are highly dependent on human beings for care and feeding.A balanced diet and regular supply of fresh water is really essential for health and longetivity.
Cats that are allowed to roam freely outside of the house may have some degree of independence and freedom. However, the outdoors may also pose hazards to the safety of the cats. It is said that cats who are allowed outside has an average life expectancy of 2 to 3 years.Eventhough indoor cats may have the same freedom as the outdoor cats, many indoor cats live happy and complete lives.
