9 AUG 69 - 3rd row. I remember the opening group - a new group from England - Jethro Tull. A fun performance, but nothing to write home about. When Zep came on, a spotlight from the back of the auditorium reflected off of Bonzo's bass drum. Every time Bonzo pressed his bass drum pedal, the light would flicker in my eyes. Very annoying. Zep was much louder than Tull, but not deafening like 1971 or 1973. During one of the loud sections - I think it was How Many More Times, Robert's mike shut off for about 15-20 seconds (seemed longer, but could have been shorter) and I could still hear him! In Richard Cole's book, he makes a reference to being able to hear Robert at the back of the auditorium when the mike went out. It could have been this show, but I seriously doubt he could have been heard in the back. Robert looked uncomfortable on stage, while Jimmy seemed very confident - almost at peace with himself. Totally different presence between the two. |
