Heroes
We all have heroes, people we look up to, people we respect. Heroes come in many different packages, different walks of life, and different fields of achievement.
What is a hero, what kind of characteristics do we look for?
A hero is someone who never give up. They have that courage of heart to keeping going no matter the odds.
Noah, a loyal servant of God, was presented a two-fold task. First, to build an ark, and second, to preach to the people in hopes of finding passengers. For over 100 years, he continued to preach, without any response, knowing judgment was coming. Determination, definitely a characteristic I would look for in a hero. Do you think maybe that is why God chose Noah?
A hero accepts challenges, even though it requires risks. When someone is needed, a hero steps forward. A young lad named David, willing accepted the challenge of his young life. Stepping out to face a 9 foot tall, battle hardened warrior named Goliath, with a sling, some stones, and the power of God.
A hero is humble, not arrogant or boastful of himself or his achievements. Moses, a humble servant, became a rescuer, a mediator, and a shepherd of Israel, continually giving the glory to God.
A hero is courageous when facing the enemy. Samson, a courageous warrior, wasn't afraid of any odds. He killed a lion with his bare hands, took on armies by himself, and overcame his failure to God by being the instrument of destruction for the Philistines with his life.
Heroes are those who make commitments and keep them. We read of Joshua, a great warrior, an explorer, a leader who committed his life to God. Not being swayed by peer pressure when he stated, "I and my family choose to follow the Lord.
Heroes find a way to get the job done. One of the greatest heroes of the Bible is Paul, a true servant of God, accepting the will of the Father with meekness and joy.
Heroes, a cloud of witnesses showing us the race can be run, and through God, can be won.
