Review: What a weird little movie.
Bloodmoon, filmed and taking place in Australia, is the story of a psychotic teacher stalking pretty chicks at St. Elizabeth's Catholic High School, where he works. It's also the classic 80s story of the poor kids versus the rich kids, with one of the poor guys falling for one of the elite rich girls (who just so happens to be on that wacky teacher's list of girls to kill). In fact, there's so much melodrama in here that this plays like some sort of weird Karate Kid-meets-Cutting Class-meets-Australia, 90210. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.
The makers of Bloodmoon throw everything that's great about American slasher movies into the mix, and by the boatload. There's a decent amount of blood, lots (and I mean lots) of naked breasts, and plenty of great angst-ridden teens giving wonderful lines. In addition, there's an awfully long school dance sequence involving an 80s power ballad band, and their music just makes you smile, even though they play it too damn long. Speaking of music, those in charge of putting together Bloodmoon don't let the viewers down in terms of score: when there's a killing comin', you know about it; likewise, when those sentimental moments of teen love arive, you're sure to hear the strings lighten up on the soundtrack.
All-in-all, Bloodmoon does come across somewhat as a farce of itself, but not without delivering some great slasher cinema at the same time.
