Review: Carrie 2 seems like a combination of the movies Varsity Blues and The Craft, two movies which, like Carrie 2, could have and should have been much more enjoyable than they actually were.
I can't really put my finger on what could have been done to improve Carrie 2, but I can guess. The film is almost an exact duplicate of the original film in terms of plotting--whole scenes seem very reminiscent of the first film. In addition to that, the story just seems a little too contrived and things just kind of happen without any thought or build-up.
Now that type of thing is fine, if the movie doesn't plan on taking itself seriously--but Carrie 2 does take itself seriously--or at least, I think it does.
The good things about the movie are definitely plentiful, making it the best slasher flick of the past half-year or so (with the exception of the excellent Bride Of Chucky). The deaths are very bloody and very creative, and are totally worth the price of admission alone (even if you have to wait for the end of the movie to see them). There's also some great scenes (much like the first film) that will hit home with high school outcasts, but these scenes, like much of the cool anti-jock revenge storyline, seem too forced.
All of that said, I can't say I didn't enjoy the movie--it was a lot of fun--and like I said, the death scenes are pretty wicked.
But the simple fact is that the best part of Carrie 2 was getting to see classic scenes from the original film back on the big screen again.
Trivia: Originally titled Carrie 2: Say You're Sorry (which, in my opinion, is actually a cooler title that The Rage.
