Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The True Story
The events that take place in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are, in fact, based on real-life events--though there was never a chainsaw involved. The story is based on a man named Ed Gein, a farmer living in rural Wyoming. In her life, Gein's mother was over-protective to the point of causing severe psychological damage to Gein. How damaging? Well, after her death, Gein preserved her room exactly the way it was before she died--including every detail, right down to the dead woman's body itself, which he kept in her favorite rocking chair.
But Gein wasn't satisfied with his mother's body. He had a hunger for flesh that would never be satiated. The man robbed a countless number of graves, storing the body parts in his house. He even began to craft interesting household tools out of the pieces he'd stolen from graves. His most prized possession, however, was a full body suit sewn together of dead female skin. Gein would strip naked and put on his skin suit and walk around the house at night--thus creating the legend that became Leatherface from the movie.
Gein eventually reached the breaking point and murdered two women--one young and one old. The police found the latter's body hanging, gutted, from Gein's barn. Though it was suspected Gein had killed more women, he was only convicted of the two murders.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is but one of three films based on Gein's life. One of them, a lesser-known gem called Deranged (which follows the Gein story closer than any others). The other film based on Gein's life is Alfred Hitchcock's classic tale Psycho.
