Director: unknown
Writer: Mark Protosevich
Starring: Robert Englund and Kane Hodder
Plot Summary: What an event. This film has been floating around the heads of New Line Cinema executives (and thousands of Freddy and Jason fans) since 1986. It finally became a reality when New Line bought the rights to the Friday the 13th Series from Paramount in 1992. They had just finished sending Freddy to hell in Freddy's Dead, and in order to have Jason meet up with him, they had to send Jason there too. Hence, in the final moments of Jason Goes to Hell, Freddy's glove reaches up to grab Jason's mask and pulls it down into the earth.
So the set-up is now complete. Freddy and Jason will meet in Hell...but what will they do when they get there?
No one really seems to know what's going on in the film (New Line is currently working from the eighth draft of the script!). Earlier drafts had Jason and Freddy conspiring to kill Satan, then fighting over who would rule Hell. This seems like a really weak idea. It almost seems like the two slasher icons are going to have to be resurrected on earth somehow if they're to have a decent film.
Will they work together or duke it out till the death? We'll find out (hopefully).
UPDATES:
1/20--Well, you never can tell in this world. Though the film was all ready to go, apparently, budgetary concerns suddenly arose, and now the previous choice for director has been yanked, and they've yet to fill the slot. According to a new interview with Robert Englund, the film will happen, but now not until after the strike, and after Jason X. So there you have it. Don't be expecting F vs. J this year, unfortunately.
8/16--The new writer of the film is Mark Protosevich, who also penned the Jennifer Lopez flick The Cell.
7/20/00--The official starting date of production has been announced, and it is December 16, 2000! New Line Cinema is looking to have the film completed for a Fall 2001 release, which would (coupled with Jason X in early April, mean that two Jason flicks will be coming out in 2001! Pretty cool. We'll see how this shapes up!
9/22--This information comes directly from Robert Englund himself: supposedly, the new draft of the screenplay was due at New Line's offices last Wednesday, and the guy who directed the film Mimic (which was a pretty good flick, actually) is supposed to be directing, though he hasn't officially signed yet.
Additionally (this is just a rumor--not told to me by Robert Englund), there is a rumor going around now that the film will have two filmed endings that will be released to theaters--one with Jason winning the final battle, and one with Freddy winning. Sounds pretty cool to me. We'll see how this pans out.
