Review: Thirty years or so ago, Mrs. Slater suffered some rather tragic circumstances during labor. Since then, she's been a little bit angry and a little bit crazy. But just how crazy?
Well, crazy enough to turn her house into a sorority house, for one thing! We jump ahead to modern (1983) times, and find that the chicks living in the house aren't too fond of Mrs. Slater's iron grip. They're all graduating and want to have a final party at the house, but Slater, of course, doesn't want her house used for such garbage. To get even, the chickies decide to play a little "college prank" on her (what is it with this college movies and pranks? I've been through college and I've never seen anyone play these stupid pranks, but all of these campus movies seem to revolve around them!). Something goes horrible wrong with the prank, and, well, you know where things go from here.
But what you really want to know is, is it any good? Well, let's put it this way. It's not bad. There's a good number of deaths, some of them are cool, and there's a decent amount of blood. In addition, there's a couple of nudie scenes and lots of college humor (what is it with the fat guy in the pool? I don't get it), but the real neat thing about the film is its plot twists. Now, I'm not exactly one for suprise endings or revelations, but this movie does a good job of holding the suspense and keeping you interested long enough to reach the payoff, which actually does work pretty well.
And then there's those great party scenes! First of all, the music for the party was supplied by some early 80s band of hacks. We're treated to lots of shots of this Rod Stewart wannabe rocking his shaggy head back-and-forth while crooning. Also, check out the great scene where each of the seven sorority sisters eyes each-other dubiously from across the party hall! Great stuff.
It might not make your personal top ten list, but House On Sorority Row will definitely make you think twice about those so-called clever "college pranks," and deliver a bit of slasher delight to your viewing diet.
Trivia: Also known as House of Evil and Seven Sisters.
