Review: Lover's Lane was a Blockbuster Video exclusive (only they carry the title), and it may have never been released in theaters, but it's one of the more fun slasher movies I've seen recently.
Taking its cue from the old story about the guy with the hook that everybody's heard before (and, it seems, everybody wants to make a movie about), Lover's Lane crafts a pretty clever and thoughtful slasher flick using minimal resources and a very minimal script.
Thirteen years ago, on Valentine's Day, two people were found murdered at Lover's Lane. One of them was the wife of a cop, the other, the husband of principal at this particular small town's high school. Now in the present day, the man caught for the crimes, bearing a hook on his hand, is serving his sentence at the local mental hospital. Meanwhile, back at Highscool, USA, everybody is just jumping about the Valentine's Day celebrations planned for the evening. Everybody except for Mike, who really wants to dump his bitchy girlfriend (who also happens to be daughter of the head doctor at the mental hospital). To further add to this soap-opera set-up, Mike is the son of the man who was murdered thirteen years ago, and the young girl who longs to be his girl is the daughter of the widowed cop.
Things are getting really wild when the bitch finds out that Mike aims to dump her, and they only more interesting when the man with the hook escapes from the mental hospital, headed, it seems, for the daughter of the head doctor who's tormented him all these years. The guy with the hook aims to finish what he started at Lover's Lane.
All of this seems like a lot of "coincidence", and, of course, it is, but it also allows for the makers of Lover's Lane to pull out all the stops in bringing you a really twisty, surprise-filled slasher romp. There's some good gore, some wonderfully cheesy lines, and lots of lame teenage pranks going on, as well as, of course, that great Lover's Lane setting. Head over to Blockbuster and give this one a try.
