Review: Bates Motel was a failed two-hour TV pilot that tried to create and anthology series about the motel. The story is kind of a murder-mystery, sort of in the Scooby-Doo tradition, with all of the characters trying to guess Who's Mrs. Bates.
According to the story, while Norman was in the mental hospital, he befriended a man named Andy, whom Norman put on his will as the inheiritor of the motel. Andy re-opens the motel, and that's when things start to turn strange.
You can still catch the movie (if you'd even want to) on cable sometimes, usually during the Soap Opera daytime hours, almost always on either Lifetime or USA.
Trivia: Bates Motel, having been made in 1987, doesn't quite fit with the chronology established by Psycho 4: The Beginning. According to that film, the Bates house was badly damaged by fire while Norman was still alive. But in Bates Motel, taking place after Norman has died, the house looks perfect--well, not perfect, but you know what I mean.
