Review: At first glances, Sleepaway Camp is nothing more than a really cheap Friday the 13th clone. But when you actually sit down and watch it, you find yourself in the grip of something....much, much more strange than any friday film ever was.
This is one bizzare fucking movie. It starts out with a boating accident on a lake, claiming the lives of the father and brother of a little girl named "Angela." We zip forward a few years and meet Angela at age twelve or so. She lives with her aunt, and her aunt is probably one of the worst actresses to ever grace the screen.
Angela and her cousin head off for summer camp, where they encounter all of the usual stuff that goes along with camp--outdoor stuff, lake swimming, girls blossoming into women, friendly (and not-so friendly) inter-cabin and intra-cabin pranks, etc. In fact, all-in-all, Sleepaway Camp covers all of the summer camp movie bases--even more so than Friday the 13th did.
And then there's the whole killer thing...which isn't all that special, except for the curling iron death (just watch, you'll see).
Oh yeah, and the ending....unless you've already heard some stuff about Sleepaway Camp, you won't see it coming. This ending comes so far out of left field...well, let's just leave it at that....point is, you won't be forgetting Sleepaway Camp as quickly as some of the other Friday clones.
Trivia: Sleepaway Camp was also released under the title Nightmare Vacation.
