Review: There's this old urban legend that I know, and it goes something like this...
A first-time screenwriter had a great idea for a horror flick, regarding some typical college kids on a typical college campus that were stalked by a typical slasher movie killer using urban legends as his theme. But the studios wouldn't accept the idea without "witty, Scream-ish dialogue." But the writer couldn't come up with much on his own, so he just borrowed a few phrases from the previously mentioned film and got together with a first-time director that doesn't know how to stage scary scenes and they made the movie Urban Legend.
Trust me, that's how it really happened.
This movie, had it been made three years ago, would have come out direct-to-video, and that would have been good, because then there wouldn't have been so many expectations. This is cliche from beginning to end, and not very good cliche at that. A few clever lines and some blood do not make up for a lack of a good killer, or a good plot, or good characters, or an unpredictable ending...etc.
Trivia: Robert Englund, Freddy Krueger of Nightmare On Elm St. fame and Brad Dourif from Child's Play make appearances, as does Danielle Harris (from Halloween 4 and 5), and their moments are the best of the film. Together, their screen-time maybe runs about five minutes....I know, it's a sad, sad world....
