The Box
Part 4
... a giant maze that looked as though (if it were smaller) a mouse would be put through it to test its intelligence level.
"Gr! Guess we gotta go through it huh?" Tori said, turning to the others, who all nodded their heads.
They headed towards the front of the maze, but saw two openings in the maze.
They examined each one to try to decide which they should enter. When Mevima was crossing from one to another she stopped when she was directly in between the two.
She called to the others. "Hey! Come look at what I found - I think it's a riddle or something!"
Everyone else came running as Mevima began to read the riddle aloud. "One leads to betrayal; to enemies between friends. The other to happiness; where this journey ends."
Tori ran forward and read it over. "Look, there's smaller writing here! Anybody got a magnifying glass?"
RubyFire grinned, "Fine print!" and began digging through her Mary Poppin-style handbag. "I know there's one in here somewhere... aha!" She pulled out a giant magnifying glass which read, 'Acme Patented Fine-Print-Reader' on the side and handed it to Torizo.
"I once used this for finding my way out of an asylum - they didn't even have white coats there!"
Tori gratefully accepted it, ignoring Ruby's babble. She then held it over the fine print and read it. "To the left Amimej sings, to the right Sug will sing your doom." She frowned at this. "Who are 'Amimej' and 'Sug'? I can barely pronounce their names!"
Ruby stared at it for awhile and she was staring so hard and so long without blinking that it looked like Ruby had frozen stone-solid. After a looong time of staring, Ruby fell down right on her head then rolled over and stood on her head.
"Hmm..." she said, then quickly rolled back over and jumped to her feet.
"I know what it is now! I know who they are!" she shouted.
"Did you clear your head and remember?" TC asked the excited kitty, but she was too excited and didn't hear him.
"They are... Jemima and Gus! It was backwards!" she was so exited she was jumping up and down by now. "The left is the correct way! C'mon! Let's go!"
She rushed off towards the left entry but Kor grabbed her arm.
"Wait! Don't you think that we should rest first and go later?" he asked her, pleading with his eyes.
"Uh... No?" she said cautiously. They then had a vote and decided that they should rest before they went on.
Ruby pulled a bunch of pillows and sleeping bags out of her bag and handed each of them one of each thing.
"We might as well spend the night... we've had a long day." she remarked as they all settled down comfortably.
Soon everyone exept Kor and Alayla was asleep.
The two got up and crept out through the hole in the wall which they had come in by.
There they met up with a very wild-looking Tom that had the sense of darkness hanging around him.
He spoke softly out of the darkness, saying, "They are getting too close to the exit.
If they escape then they will tell everyCat about this place and the experiments I'm doing.
I must make it harder, but you must not let them go any further until I prepare their means of death."
The dark Cat laughed so evilly that even the Pollicles, who were only afraid of Rumpus, would have scurried away in fear.
"Yes, your Evilness." the two Cats responded in unison. "We will do as you ask."
They turned and walked to their sleeping bags, barely missing the red and white Queen who had woken up and listened in on their evil plans. RubyFire shrank back into the shadows as she saw Kor and Alayla approaching.
She watched them go across the room to their sleeping bags which she had provided and waited cautiously for a little while so that they would go to sleep. When she was absolutely certain that they were asleep, she walked over to her sleeping bag and sat on it, in a daze of the recent happenings.
'I shouldn't have trusted them in the first place, the traitors!' she thought. 'They are Macavity's henchCats and his henchCats or henchrats are never up to any good. Now they're gonna try and kill us. Why didn't they just do it in the first place, when they captured us?'
She decided to get some sleep and get them all out of there in the morning...
