On the Set

The movie's casting was surrounded by controversy. Rex Harrison reprised the role he played on Broadway, and he reportedly wanted Julie Andrews to carry over her portrayal of Eliza from the stage version, as well. However, the studio felt differently, and Audrey Hepburn got the role. Audrey reportedly was very unhappy with her experience filming the movie. In particular, she was disappointed that her singing voice was dubbed. In the end, fans who felt that Julie Andrews had been done an injustice were vindicated, as Julie went on to win the Best Actress Oscar for Mary Poppins that year.

Did You Know...

• Jimmy Brett's singing was dubbed by Bill Shirley, while Audrey Hepburn's was dubbed by the ubiquitous Marni Nixon.
• Costumer and set designer Cecil Beaton spent over a year researching the time period before creating his designs. He went on to win two Oscars for his work.
