Rei is a very strongwilled and independent person. She lives with her maternal grandfather at the Cherry Hill Temple. Her mother died in childbirth and her father is a politician who works abroad. Rei looks up to her father more than anyone else. Rei's grandfather taught her martial arts and is training her to be a priestess. Rei has already mastered the art of reading the sacred fires. She always knows when something bad is about to happen. She can see the good inside any person or monster.
Rei is very respected among the other students at her school (she attends a different school than the other scouts). She loves the attention they give her, but she doesn't have any real friends outside the senshi because everyone is afraid of her. They think her ability to see the future is kind of strange. Ami is her best friend because she understands her.
Rei tends to get very frustrated when things go wrong. She gets upset and yells alot, especially at Serena when she is crying. In the beginning, Rei thought that she should be the leader of the Sailor Scouts instead of Serena, but when Serena proved that she could be a good leader when necessary, Rei changed her mind. Some may think that Rei hates Serena, but in reality she loves her very much and just doesn't know how to show it. She would give up her own life to protect Sailor Moon.
