Songs from the Dark City - Dark City (1998) + Tears for Fears's Songs from the Big Chair (1985). There is a short pre-credits sequence (the City goes to sleep)...When the title Dark City appears (on the spirally background), then fades away, START CD. "Working Hour", a real noirish song (w/ sax!) fits the late nite mood well, as do the other songs, but it's really just all building up to the High Point: 30 mins. into the movie. "I Believe" ends w/ Kiefer's character being transported to the Strangers' underground lair. "Broken" starts w/ him brewing up a human being formula ('one part teenage rebellion',etc.) and the Strangers working underground. At the line "Funny how time fliessss", a giant face opens up to reveal a giant clock. When it hits 12, the City falls asleep (couple seated at a table, their heads drop in time w/ the music), song switch to "Head Over Heels"...the whole following sequence of the City being built up & re-arranged, to this song and the last one, "Listen", is incredible! 8/06.The Thing That Should Not Be - John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) + Metallica's S&M (that 'live w/ the San Fran Symphony' CD, 1999). - Begin CD when the 'Universal' logo fades away...Let Songs #1 - 5 play for a neat 1/2 hour synch. High points: opening credits set to "Ecstasy of Gold", the dog being chased & shot at set to "Call of Ctulu", dog-to-Thing transformation set to "The Thing That Should Not Be". 8/06
Sisters of Suspiria - Dario Argento's Suspiria (1977) + The Sisters of Mercy's Floodland (1987). Lyrical references to Rain, Blood, & Hallways. Begin CD when opening credits fade. Walking out of the airport, into the stormy night, to "Dominion". High points: the opening murder is set to song #2, "Flood II"--eerie!, when Jessica Harper walks into frame as the song "Lucretia My Reflection" kicks in, "This Corrosion" - Dance class. Entrance of the 3 old instructors/witches to that 'choir' style singing is spooky..."Driven Like the Snow" - Long shot of the hallway, set to the opening of this song, the ballet class as the music kicks in ("white dress", "big white bed"). Nice fade-out into blackness and the full moon. "Never Land" opens to German dudes dancing. "Torch" - blind man and his guide dog ("black and hard to see")..."Colours" - girls in the pool ("colors wrapped around"--red to white to blue. It goes to green, then red, green again, red again, ha-ha!) 8/04
Tip: Put your TV on mute...if the movie is on DVD, turn on the subtitles.
