Driven,
a story about competition car racing, is directed by Renny
Harlin. Beau Brandenberg (played by Til Schweiger), the reigning
champ, is challenged by a rookie, Jimmy Bly (played by Kip
Pardue). The rivalry is both on and off the track, involving
Lucretia Clan (played by Stacy Edwards). Carl Henry (played
by Burt Reynolds) hires Joe Tanto (played by Sylvester Stallone),
a former champ, to coach Bly into defeating Brandenberg. Much
of the film involves simulated races, including dangerous
accidents, in Chicago, Tokyo, and Toronto. If filmviewers
cannot predict that one will win the world championship and
the other will win the girl, they are naïve about the
simple plots of Hollywood B movies. For a slightly more serious
film about speedway racism, filmviewers should consider The
Fast and the Furious (2001). MH
