Monsoon Wedding

Monsoon WeddingMonsoon Wedding is about a gala wedding in New Delhi. Directed by Mira Nair, the purpose of the story is to show Indian traditions at their finest, with dance, music, and costuming that will impress filmviewers around the world. The story involves the arrival and participation of members of an extended family in the days prior to the wedding, with the wedding itself serving as a final climax. Some members of the extended family have not seen one another for a while, so there is an inevitable conflict involving the generations as well as those who have become so assimilated to life abroad that they find some difficulty fitting themselves into the ritual. The couple to be wedded by arranged marriage consists of Aditi (played by Vasundhara Das) and Hemant (played by Parvin Dabas), the latter an engineer from Houston. At one point, Aditi's boss threatens the marriage, and in another incident Aditi's cousin Ria (played by Shafali Shetty) protests that one of the richest relatives once molested her as a girl, resulting in a decision by her uncle to evict the guest and his wife from the wedding party. The festivities proceed despite the possibility of financial disaster for the family. MH
