The Tombstone

Yes, I have come out of hiding for Wrestlemania to do a special column. I will again apologize for the lack of columns, but then again, it’s not like any of you missed me anyway. But it’s Wrestlemania Sunday, and I’m EXCITED! WOOOOOOO! For those of you who watched the WWF years ago, this column should provide a fun read. For those of you who started watching in 1998 or later, I’m going to give you a bit of background real fast…

The Slammy Awards were held I believe 4 times total, twice in the 1980s, and twice in the mid 1990s (1996, 1997). They were an awards show for the WWF, where the fans voted on who should win in various categories. I for one enjoyed the hell out of the Slammies, and thought they were a fun way to kick off Wrestlemania weekend. So what I’m going to do in this column, is present a few (10) categories, a few possible candidates, and then my choice for the winner. Enjoy…

For the category “Best Buns”…

I thought this category was hilarious when they did it in 1996. But none the less, I think this category is pretty self explanatory, and here’s the possible nominees…

Vince McMahon
Trish Stratus
The Rock
Stacy Kiebler
Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley

No question here, to me the winner is Stacy Kiebler by a landslide. If you’re male and you’ve seen her in a thong, you agree. If not, I feel sorry for you…

For the category “Newcomer of the Year”…

I’m going to include guys who came in as part of the Alliance, and this is for the calendar year 2001, so just to make that clear. Anyway…nominees…

Rhyno
Booker T
The Hurricane
Rob Van Dam
Diamond Dallas Page

And the winner is…Booker T. I came close to saying Rhyno, but he has been out with an injury for quite some time, so I went ahead and stuck with Booker T. Even though many say he has been underutilized, I still believe out of all of the new guys this year, he has had the most impact and the most entertaining television moments. And for the record, Rob Van Dam didn’t get it because he sucks on the mic, and I was going for a more well rounded person.

For the category “Freedom of Speech”…

This was an award they gave out in 1997 that was basically for whoever took the most liberty on the mic, speaking their mind and cursing, what have you. The nominees…

Stone Cold Steve Austin
Chris Jericho
The Rock
Triple H
Kurt Angle

This is a close one. It’s hard to be standout on the mic as far as the language you use, since cursing is commonplace now. I have in my mind the classic exchange between Chris Jericho and the Rock, when making fun of Booker T, Stephanie and Shane McMahon, and Rhyno. You know the one “Here we’ve got the GORE, and the WHORE”…”Booker T, hair done by Whoopi, Shane McMahon, still a pussy!” But, the Rock has had his strudel jokes and all of that, so the nod goes to the Rock.

For the category “WWF Diva of the Year”…

By WWF diva, I mean Alliance or WWF, obviously. And I’m going for more than just looks, like accomplishments over the year and whatnot. So, the nominees are…

Trish Stratus
Stacy Kiebler
Lita
Torrie
Mighty Molly

Trish Stratus takes this one, hands down. Not only is she attractive, but she had one hell of a year last year. She was in a main event feud with her involvement with Vince and Stephanie McMahon, then she went on to win the Women’s title later in the year. She has improved greatly in the ring as well.

For the category of “Best Entrance”…

Who has the coolest entrance to the ring? The nominees…

Kane
The Undertaker
Booker T
Christian
Chris Jericho

It was close to me between Chris Jericho and Booker T on this one. But I really like how Booker T’s pyro keeps going after the initial blast, how it keeps flaming until he gets into the ring.

For the category of “Best Finisher”…

Who’s finishing move is the best or the coolest? The nominees…

Stone Cold Steve Austin – The Stone Cold Stunner
Rhyno – The Gore
Bradshaw – The Clothesline From Hell
Triple H – The Pedigree
Kurt Angle – Ankle Lock/Angle Slam

I might be biased, but Triple H’s Pedigree gets the nod from me. I know I don’t want to have my face slammed into the mat. A close second would be Bradshaw’s Clothesline From Hell…that shit looks painful.

For the category of “Lifetime Achievment”…

I’m going to include just the guys on the current roster, as I don’t feel like researching on the older guys. The nominees…

Diamond Dallas Page
The Undertaker
Vince McMahon
Jerry Lawler
Ric Flair

That’s a no brainier, Ric Flair all the way.

For the category of “Match of the Year”…

Again, I’m doing the calendar year of 2001, so nothing after that counts. The nominees…

Royal Rumble Match – Royal Rumble 2001
Austin vs. Angle – Summerslam 2001
Chris Jericho vs. The Rock – No Mercy 2001
Triple H vs. Stone Cold – No Way Out 2001
TLC II – Wrestlemania X-7

I’m going to give the nod to Triple H vs. Stone Cold from No Way Out. That match was the 2 of 3 falls match, and it had it all, including a surprising Triple H win. A close second however would go to The Rock and Jericho at No Mercy.

For the category of “Best Entrance Music”…

Best music, not taking into account the rest of the entrance, just the audio. And the nominees…

Chris Jericho
Christian
Edge
Triple H
The Undertaker

Triple H takes this one with relative ease. Motorhead has given the Game the best entrance music in the business right now, in my opinion.

For the category of “Superstar of the Year”…

The nominees…

Triple H
Stone Cold Steve Austin
The Rock
Chris Jericho
Kurt Angle

Stone Cold Steve Austin must be the winner here. He was very entertaining throughout his heel stuff, and is the only guy who was consistently in the main event picture all year due to Triple H and the Rock both being gone for part of the year, and Kurt Angle and Jericho not being in the main event steadily.

Well, that does it for this time. I hope you all enjoy Wrestlemania. I know I will. So until next time…
