The Tombstone

So it's come to a close after all of these years. It's official now. The USA Network and the WWF are parting ways this coming Monday night. We have witnessed the final WWF Monday night show on the USA Network, and era has closed, and a new one will begin on TNN on the 25th. Considering all of the great memories the WWF and USA have produced in their time together, I figured I'd do a little "Top 50 RAW Moments" (moments, not episodes) in this edition of the Tombstone. Granted, USA and the WWF had a 17 year relationship, and I've only witnessed about 7 1/2 of those as a loyal fan, but I figure I still have enough memories to compile a list. I might not be exact on the dates here, but I know I'm in the neighborhood. They're not neccessarily ranked in order by the way. Anyway, here goes...

50. The very first ever RAW IS WAR in March of 1997. It might have been somewhat lackluster compared to what we're used to seeing now, but it was good for it's day. With guys like Sycho Sid, Bret Hart, Vader, Mankind, and the Undertaker making it a memorable night. Besides that, it was the beginning of the version of RAW we know now.
49. August 1996: After defeating the Undertaker at Summerslam the night before in a Boiler Room Brawl Match, not to mention the fact that he had united with Paul Bearer, causing Bearer to turn on the Undertaker after 6 years, Mankind and his new manager Paul Bearer had come out to the ring to gloat. As they did so, Druids began to flood the aisleway, a few of them carrying the seemingly lifeless body of the Undertaker. They laid the Undertaker in the middle of the aisleway. Paul Bearer declared that this was merely the corpse of the Undertaker, that the maggots would set in before long, and then...the Undertaker sat up. The Phenom got to his feet, thrust his arms into the air, causing a huge erruption of flames from the ringposts (similar to Kane's pyro that we know today), then the Undertaker climed into the ring, and Paul Bearer and Mankind high tailed it out of the building through the crowd. All in all a very cool moment.
48. November 1995: Shawn Michaels had been riding a major babyface wave as of late and was in many people's view on his way to a first WWF title reign. It had been documented on WWF television that HBK had been attacked by a group of punks while at a Syracuse, New York, club one night and that they did a pretty good number on Shawn. On this particular episode of RAW, Shawn was to face Owen Hart. During the course of the match, Owen landed his famous enzuguri kick to the back of the head. Shawn managed to recover and toss Hart from the ring. As Shawn paraded around the ring, he suddenly fell limply to the mat. Owen and everyone around the ring area seemed genuinely concerned as the announcers speculated on whether it was Owen's kick that did the damage or if it was just the final straw after the beating Shawn took in Syracuse. Shawn was taken away in an ambulance and the program went off the air with many questions unanswered. Very compelling stuff, especially since it was before the time when the internet so readily revealed the "truth" that Shawn was fine and just taking some time off.
47. September 1997: In an MSG RAW, where we've come to expect quality moments, this one was no exception. Steve Austin had been on a ramage of stunners on announcers as of late, but this night was special. The Texas Rattlesnake delivered his first ever Stone Cold Stunner on Vince McMahon. After Vince tried to calm Austin down, Stone Cold replied with a good 'ol "you can kiss my ass!", kicked Vince in the stomach, and delivered a Stunner. After a barrage of middle fingers, Austin was taken away by the police.
46. April 1997: It was the night after the April PPV that year, and Bret Hart and Stone Cold had battled to a DQ victory for Austin at that event. However, the next night, even in light of Stone Cold being named the number one contender for the Undertaker's WWF title, Austin was still fixated on the Hitman. Austin called Bret out for a street fight, and, after Shawn Michaels had chased the other Hart family members away, Stone Cold really did open up a can of whoopass on Bret. Austin took a chair to Bret's ankle and knee, stomping on the chair as it lay wrapped around the Hitman's leg. Smashing Bret in the wrist to keep him from fighting back, Austin really laid Bret out. After Bret had been taken to an ambulance outside the arena, Austin managed to sneek inside the ambulance and continue his attack. Very good stuff, and a perfect storyline to cover for Bret's knee surgery.
45. July 1997: The birth of Dude Love. After weeks of Mankind trying to get Stone Cold Steve Austin to pick him for a partner in the finals of the ongoing Tag Team Title Tournament, Mick had reached the end of his rope. Austin had repeatedly told Mankind that he didn't tag with mutilated freaks like Mankind. The night had finally come, in San Antonio Texas, it was Steve Austin and a yet to be determined partner against the British Bulldog and Owen Hart for the WWF Tag Team titles. Mick had threatened a week earlier that with what he would do this week, the WWF, Mick Foley, and Steve Austin would never be the same again. The match got underway with Austin taking on both men and doing fairly well at it. Austin managed to get both of his opponents outside the ring, when a voice came over the speakers and an image appeared on the Titantron..."Hey Steve-o, it's me, your tag team partner! Now I can't blame you for not wanting to team with a mutilated freak like Mankind, but you never said nothin' about teaming with the hippest cat in the land. Steve-o, it's me, Dude Love, here to save the day!" With that, the by now-infamous Dude Love theme music hit. As Owen and the Bulldog looked on in just as much astonishment and disgust as Austin did, out came Mick Foley dressed in bright blue tights, a tie-dyed t-shirt, sunglasses, and a goofy hat. Dude danced his way to the ring, and the Bulldog and Owen attacked a preoccupied Stone Cold. Dude climed the ring apron and waited for the tag, when he got it, Dude hit the "Love Handle" (Mandible Claw) until it was broken up and both members of the Hart team worked over Foley. Austin re-entered the ring, hit a Stunner, Dude made the cover, and we had new tag team champions. As Jim Ross screamed "Ms. Foley's baby boy has his first taste of WWF gold!", two "Dudettes" rushed the ring and their hero, Dude Love. Austin handed Mick his half of the tag titles, shook his hand, and left the ring. A very memorable night.
44. September 1997: Cactus Jack comes to the WWF. A scheduled street fight between Triple H and Dude Love was scratched, when the Dude and Mankind appeared on the TitanTron and revealed that Cactus Jack would be filling in against HHH. They brawled all over Madison Square Garden, before Cactus finally got the win on the stage with a piledriver through a table.
43. March 29th, 1998: X-Pac makes his return to the WWF and DX is reborn. X-Pac returned to the WWF the day after Wrestlemania XIV and joined with Triple H and the New Age Outlaws to reform D-Generation X. X-Pac ripped WCW a new one with some harsh words about Bischoff and Hogan, and then he and Triple H interupted a cage match between the Outlaws and Cactus Jack/Terry Funk to help the Outlaws win the tag team titles.
42. Ocotber 13th, 1997: During a backstage interview, Shawn Michaels coined the phrase "D-Generation X" referring to himself and Triple H being constantly called degenerates, and the fact that "generation x always gets a bad rap". Obviously, the name stuck.
41. Feburary 1999: An Inferno match between Kane and the Undertaker. After the match, we saw the Undertaker light a teddy bear on fire and bring a sobbing Mr. McMahon to his knees in fear. Good stuff.
40. (Late) March 1997: The second RAW after Wrestlemania 13 saw Bret Hart, who made his (American) heel turn a week earlier, come out an interupt a match taking place between his brother Owen and brother-in-law British Bulldog, to reunite the family for the first time in years and reform the Hart Foundation.
39. May 25th, 1998: After Vince McMahon had ordered a match to take place between the Undertaker and Steve Austin to "punish" Austin, Vince also named himself special referee. After McMahon had come to the ring, the Undertaker made his way down. Undertaker prepared for the match, but then began stalking McMahon. Vince calmly told the Undertaker to back off, but the Undertaker grabbed McMahon and drilled him with a Chokeslam. Kane ran down before Undertaker could deliver a Tombstone.
38. August 1999: The night after Summerslam 1999, Triple H manuvered himself into a title match with Mankind. HHH called out Foley, holding Jim Ross as hostage. After Foley agreed to the match, HHH broke JR's arm. Then, in the evening's main event Triple H captured the WWF Heavyweight title for the first time, with a little assistance of course.
37. December 1997: Shawn Michaels and Triple H, along with Chyna, had a special Christmas present for all of the WWF fans. Shawn proclaimed it was a very special "package"...Shawn and Triple H took off the ropes they were wearing, ripped off their wrapping paper boxers, and revealed that they were wearing just stockings over their manhoods. All three of them turned around, and with Chyna (still clothed) providing the X on her ass, Shawn's ass reading "Merry", and HHH reading "Mas", DX had delivered a very memorable X-mas present.
36. May 26th, 1997: Shawn Michaels and Stone Cold Steve Austin win the tag team titles from the Hart Foundation. Michaels and Austin damn sure weren't friends, but they teamed up on this night to claim tag team gold from Owen Hart and the British Bulldog. After the win, Austin attacked an injured Bret Hart and furthered his knee injury.
35. May 22nd, 2000: The Undertaker returns after over eight months away. The Undertaker made his presence known when he rode out to crash the McMahon-Helmsley party.
34. June 26th, 2000: Vince McMahon - the genetic jackhammer! The quote alone was worth making this list. Oh god...just try and picture that...(Oh yeah, and Mick Foley was named WWF commishioner)
33. (Late) July 1996: The night after the International Incident IYH Pay Per View event saw Sunny's Smoking Gunns take on Shawn Michaels and Ahmed Johnson for the WWF Tag Team Titles. The match tried to occur at the top of the show, but Shawn splattered cake all over Sunny, and the match ended up being delayed until later on. When match time finally came around, Faarooq made his WWF debut by attacking Ahmed Johnson and aligning himself with Sunny. Just for the record, I still smile when I picture that goofy ass helmet Faarooq wore when he debuted...
32. (Late) Feburary 1997: The last Monday Night RAW before the transition to RAW IS WAR. It eminated from Berlin, Germany. The main event was a spectacular one on one matchup between Owen Hart and the British Bulldog to determine the first ever European Champion. The Bulldog eventually got the win, but it was one of the best ever WRESTLING matches I have seen.
31. May 29th, 2000: Joe C (from Kid Rock) interfered in a tag team title match between Too Cool and Edge/Christian. Joe C used a Hockey Stick to low blow Christian and ultimately cost Edge/Christian the tag team titles.
30. August 1999: Jesse Ventura confronted Triple H, but on top of that, Shawn Michaels made a triple threat main event for the title shot at Summerslam between the Undertaker, Triple H, and CHYNA. Thanks to a chairshot from Stone Cold Steve Austin, Chyna got the win.
29. March 2000: After having the three-way Wrestlemania main event featured between The Rock, Big Show, and Triple H, Triple H still reigned champion. There had been a promise of no rematch. That's where Linda McMahon came in. After Linda announced she had the new Wrestlemania main event all lined up, she brought out a freshly-retired Mick Foley, for one last match. Foley attacked Triple H, who had retired him a month earlier, and Wrestlemania was nicely set up.
28. April 1st, 1996: Mankind debuts. The day after Wrestlemania XII, The Undertaker was attacked by a newcomer known as Mankind. Mankind had made his debut with a victory over Bob Holly earlier in the night. At the end of the show, as the Undertaker was about to leave the ring, Mankind pounced the Phenom. He pounded the Undertaker, climaxing with a flying elbow from the ring apron to the arena floor. Mankind then applied the Mandible Claw and foam ozzed from the Undertaker's mouth.
27. April (I think) 1999: The Undertaker and his Ministry had abducted "sweet, innocent" Stephanie McMahon. In a way to try and get at Vince McMahon, The Undertaker and his Ministry set up a wedding between the Phenom and Stephanie. Just as Paul Bearer had proclaimed Stephanie and the Lord of Darkness man and wife, the Union hit the ring and brawled with the Ministry. In the end though, it was Stone Cold Steve Austin himself who saved the owner's daughter from the clutches of the Undertaker. Afterwards, Stephanie hugged the Rattlesnake and Vince offered his thanks to his one-time bitter rival. Austin seemed blown away by the circumstances, and the show went off the air.
26. January 1998: Triple H and Shawn Michaels cut an absolutely hilarious promo. The two dressed in red, white, and blue outfits, and delivered a speech on how they would reduce their offensive actions. Triple H said "from the hours of 8 to 10 PM, we will only use the words ass, damn, and hell. We will however, never use the words, bitch, shit, fuck, goddamn, jesus christ, faggot, or any other racial or sexual slur". Michaels concluded with "And I did not have sexual relations with that intern....as a matter of fact, I was UP ALL NIGHT!" Funny stuff, I was rolling around on the floor laughing.
25. January 1998: A week before the 1998 Royal Rumble, the Undertaker and Kane reunited (or at least so it would seem until 6 days later). After clearing the ring, Kane walked up the ramp to the stage area, where he got down on one knee and did the Undertaker's salute of sorts. The Undertaker returned this guesture, and as JR proclaimed "Oh what a moment!", fire errupted from the ringposts.
24. (Late) September 1996: Diesel and Razor Ramon had left the Federation for WCW earlier that year. Basically, the WCW was trying to make it look like they were still under WWF payroll and on WCW TV. In an effort to get back at WCW, the WWF began billing "the return of Razor Ramon and Diesel". Jim Ross was the man who was behind the whole thing, and on RAW the night after September's In Your House PPV event, JR cut a promo where he ripped the WWF and Vince McMahon a new ass hole. He called Stamford a hellhole, said that he was responsible for the new talent coming in, that Vince McMahon had fired him for having Bell's Pausy, and then after really going off, JR introduced us to "Razor Ramon". Razor came out, and yeah, it was Razor Ramon, but it wasn't Scott Hall. Savio Vega attacked "Razor" before Diesel could be introduced, and the show went off the air. Good stuff. Although, just for the record, Diesel appeared a week or so later, but it wasn't Kevin Nash, actually, it was Glen Jacobs, better known now as Kane.
23. October 20th, 1997: During a match between the Nation of Domination and Ken Shamrock/Ahmed Johnson, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Chyna, and Rick Rude made their way out onto the stage area and held up their own signs. A very funny moment, as Chyna held up one that said "Spank me Vince", HHH had one that said "Who booked this CRAP?", etc. Funny stuff. And on a side note, I was there in person.
22. April 17th, 2000: Chris Jericho won the WWF title...well, sort of. Jericho was stripped moments later and the match was said to have "never happened", but it was good TV none the less.
21. August 3rd, 2000: Chris Jericho made his WWF debut. Probably one of if not the best debut ever in the WWF. Very funny, and with the Rock thrown into the mix, it was a win-win combo.
20. May 24th, 1999: The Owen Hart Tribute show. I'm not sure what to say about this, it was just the right medicine for what had happened the night before.
19. (Late) August 1998: Not to mention all of the Summerslam 1998 hype, there was a Hell in a Cell match between Mankind and Kane that was pretty damn stiff. It featured a flying dive through the ropes by Kane and just some really brutal action. It ended only when Stone Cold emerged from beneath the ring to beat the holy hell out of Kane, leaving Kane a bloody mess.
18. January 3rd, 2000: Triple H wins the WWF title from the Big Show. All I can say is THANK GOD that the title was off of that big dumb son of a bitch. Not to mention that the Game was on top once again. All the balloons and all, a good moment.
17. October 20th, 1997: Dude Love was scheduled to have a match against the British Bulldog. However, Kane had other plans for the Dude. The Big Red Machine made his way down to the ring. Dude attacked Kane, knocking him over the top rope, but Kane landed on his feet. Dude tried hitting Kane with a chair, but Kane just took a few steps backward. Suddenly, Kane grabbed Dude by the throat and DRILLED him onto the steel ramp with a chokeslam. Kane picked him up and did it again. The result was the return of Mankind and a large dent in the steel ramp.
16. (Late) October or (Early) November 1996: Steve Austin rampages Brian Pillman's house. Austin had always said he was't affraid of anyone or anything, and that he always did whatever the hell he feels like. Well, during a live RAW telecast leading into that year's Survivor Series, Austin decided to pay the Pillman family a home visit. Austin arrived on the scene to greet some security guards. He tossed one into the garage door, drowned one in a kiddie pool, slammed another's head in a car door. Eventually Austin smashed through the glass on the back door, and let himself in. As Pillman waved a gun around, and people tried to separate Austin and Pillman, shots were heard and the scene fuzzed out. Good TV? Oh hell yeah!
15. November 1996: The night after Survivor Series, Bret Hart and Owen Hart faced off in a one on one matchup. It was a great match, until Steve Austin came out and attacked the Hitman. Austin smashed Bret with a chair, then wrapped a chair around Bret's ankle. Owen was telling Austin to go ahead and snap Bret's ankle, when the British Bulldog ran to the ring and made the save. A suprising moment considering that Bulldog and Owen were tag team partners.
14. October 20th, 1997: Sunny! She came out in a nice little silver dress...no panties...and I was there in person for this one. I dunno, I think it's worthy of the top 50..
13. March 1997: The night after Wrestlemania 13 proved to be very, very interesting. Bret Hart had defeated Austin at WM, but was booed, while Austin was cheered. Bret had been the man for years. The fans loved him, the little kids looked up to him as a hero, but ever since his return in late '96, things had changed. Stone Cold had been getting some cheers lately. Bret came out and cut an interview where he said that American fans had changed. He claimed that our morals had gone straight to hell because we cheer the likes of Austin and Michaels. After Bret said "The American wrestling fans can basically KISS MY ASS!", that cued Shawn Michaels to come down to the ring. Shawn defended American rights, even saying "If that girl wants to date that guy and you don't like it, tough titty said the kitty, she's gonna do it anyway". After Michaels questioned Bret's sexuality for knowing of Michaels' Playgirl pictorial (mentioned earlier, mockingly, by Bret), Bret snapped. He beat on Michaels' bad leg, then trapped HBK in a figure-four around the ringpost. When Sid came down, the Hitman ran for cover.
12. January 1998: The night after that year's Royal Rumble, Mike Tyson was in the house. When Tyson was brought out, the proceedings didn't go too far. Stone Cold Steve Austin made his way out to the ring, and proceeded to tell Tyson that no matter what he's done in the boxing world, this is Austin's house, and then ended with this Sportcenter quote.."Right now, you've got your beady little eyes locked on the eyes, of the world's toughest son of a bitch!" Austin then flipped off Tyson, and Tyson shoved Austin. The ring flooded with people trying to separate the two, and a classic moment had just been born.
11. Feburary 7th, 2000: Kane returns after the betrayal of Tori. In the middle of the closing brawl for the night, the lights went down, and Paul Bearer quietly walked out onto the stage. BOOM! Kane was back. The Big Red Machine rushed to the ring and destroyed DX, proving that he didn't need Tori.
10. (Late) December 1998: A historic night was in store for us on this evening. Not only would we witness Mankind (Mick Foley) capture his very first WWF Championship, but (if you bothered to watch any of Nitro) you got to hear WCW announcer Tony Shivone (sp?) make a total ass of himself. I believe the exact quote was something like "Fans if you're thinking about changing the channel to the other promotion, don't bother. We have learned that Mick Foley, who wrestled here as Cactus Jack, will win their heavyweight title tonight. Oh yeah, THAT will but butts in the seats." Hmm, almost two years later, and the WWF is still kicking Nitro's ass every Monday night. Anyway, it was a historic night and it was good to see Mick Foley finally realize his dream.
09. (Early) March 1998: This particular episode of RAW gets mentioned a little later on in the column as well, but for another moment. Right now, we're talking about when Mike Tyson joined DX. In Tyson's earlier RAW appearance in January (as mentioned in this column), he was confronted by Steve Austin and all hell broke loose. Vince McMahon was determined to not let this happen again. Vince called out Tyson to conduct some business, and when it seemed all was going well, the words "Break it down!" came over the speakers, and DX (then comprised of Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and Chyna) hit the ring. Michaels called out Tyson, and the two jawed back and forth, until Tyson decided he'd give Michaels a free shot. HBK grabbed Tyson by the collar, and making sure to get in just the right camera view, ripped Tyson's WWF attitude shirt off to reveal a DX t-shirt underneath. The DX music hit and as Triple H and Chyna both re-entered the ring, Tyson and Michaels gave crotch chops and Vince McMahon looked more pissed than before.
08. (Mid) June 1998: Going in to that year's King of the Ring, which would see a double main event with Undertaker and Mankind in the Hell in a Cell, and Stone Cold and Kane in a first blood match for the title, tension was in the air, and so was the smell of a conspiracy. At the top of the show, Vince McMahon accused the Undertaker of being in a secret alliance with Kane, and that they were both plotting against Steve Austin to end his title reign and maybe his career. Undertaker denied these accusations, and a match was made for the evening, a tag team Hell in a Cell match seeing Mankind and Kane face off against the Undertaker and Steve Austin. When match time arrived, Kane and Mankind came out, then Austin, but when Undertaker's music hit, he was no where to be found. The match got underway with Kane and Mankind against Austin. With all three wrestlers outside the cell, Paul Bearer was left inside. Suddenly, the Undertaker popped up through the ring and began beating his former manager into a bloody pulp. 'Taker locked the cell door and pounded away on Bearer. As Kane scaled the cell trying to find a way in to save his father, Stone Cold beat the hell out of Mankind. Nice stuff.
07. May 29th, 2000: Not to mention the return of Kane and his stealing Triple H's title belt, this was the night that Kid Rock performed live on RAW IS WAR. A damn good night if you ask me.
06. November 1999: It was to be a beatiful night. The two lovebirds Stephanie McMahon and Test were to be married in a glorious ceramony on a live RAW telecast. After Test and Stephanie and all of the bridesmaids and all of that crap had made their way down, it was Triple H who crashed the party. Triple H revealed that he had "drugged" Stephanie and taken her to a chapel in Las Vegas and married her, thus cancelling her and Test's plans for the evening. As Stephanie pretended to be upset and Test got pissed, I could only sit back and laugh my ass off. Classic stuff.
05. January 20th, 1997: The night after the Royal Rumble, where Steve Austin had obtained a somewhat illegal victory. The referees did not see Austin get eliminated, and he suck back into the ring to eliminate Undertaker, Vader, and Bret Hart for the win. The next night on Monday Night RAW, Bret was none too happy. He came to the ring and claimed that he was screwed by "the WWF, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and YOU! (pointing at Vince McMahon)" Bret then proceeded to say the he quits, and dropped the mic and left through the crowd. Steve Austin came out shortly after, called Bret a whiner and a crybaby, and then started to go off on then-WWF commissioner Gorilla Monsoon. "As far as Gorilla Monsoon goes, I got a big bunch of bannanas and I call tell ya where to stick each and every one of 'em!"..still sticks out in my mind as vintage Austin. Pretty good stuff. Austin said as far as he knew the WWF didn't have a damn instant replay rule. None the less, Monsoon ordered a four-way match for the next Pay Per View, where Austin, Undertaker, Vader, and the Hitman (if he accepts) would get it on for the right to go to Wrestlemania. Bret of course accepted, and several more brawls errupted through the night envolving those four men.
04. (Mid) March 1997: It was the final RAW before Wrestlemania 13, the main event was a cage match for the WWF title that could potentially completely change the face of Wrestlemania. Sycho Sid would defend against Bret Hart in the cage, while Undertaker and Austin (their respective opponents) sat watching in the back with baited breath. Well, maybe they wouldn't watch from the back. About halfway into the match, both the Undertaker and Austin had made their way to the ring and were pounding away on either Hart or Sid, trying to make sure that the WWF title match at Wrestlemania would go to them and not to the other man. Finally, as the match came to an end, and Bret Hart was almost out of the cage door, the Undertaker stepped in and slammed the door in his face, allowing Sid to retain the title, and 6 days later, the Undertaker to capture the title from him at Wrestlemania. It was the aftermath of the match that was the most interesting however. After the last commercial break, Vince McMahon entered the ring to try to get a few words with Bret Hart after losing the match. Vince calmly said "You must feel extremely frustrated right now...", Hart snatched the mic, screamed "Frustrated isn't a goddamn word for it!" and shoved Vince right on his ass. Then Bret proceeded, on live TV, uncensored, to scream "THIS IS BULLSHIT!" He continued to rant "Everybody in that goddamn dressing room knows that I'm the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!"..."and if you don't like it, TOUGH SHIT!" This brought out Sid, then Austin, the the Undertaker, and an all out brawl raged on the ramp and in the ring. Then, as the broadcast was about to go off of the air, an injuried Shawn Michaels made his way down to the fray, picking up a large piece of the cage and trying to decide what to do with it.
03. June 29th, 1998: The previous night at King of the Ring had seen not only Mick Foley's incredible efforts in the Hell in a Cell, but also Kane captured the WWF title from Stone Cold Steve Austin in a First Blood match. So on RAW, Austin challenged the Big Red Machine to a rematch for his new WWF title. Even though Kane came up on the short end of things and enjoyed only a 24-hour title reign, that night sticks out as one of my favorite RIWs and that match as one of my favorite moments just for the simple fact that Kane was the champion.
02. (Early) March 1998: Shortly before Wrestlemania XIV, we hadn't seen or heard from the Undertaker ever since Kane set him ablaze inside of a casket at the 1998 Royal Rumble a couple months earlier. In what would have to be considered (at least by me) one of the best RAWs ever, Kane came out at the top of the show to challenge then number 1 contender Steve Austin to a match in the main event of the evening. However, when match time came around, DX assualted the Rattlesnake on his way to the ring, leaving Kane with no one to face for the night. After a tombstone and chokeslam to the time keeper and an assault on an over-eager fan, the Big Red Machine and Paul Bearer proclaimed that the Undertaker was gone for good, and had the bell rung ten times (I guess actually the ring announcer was assaulted AFTER that..) in memory of the Undertaker. Of course, nothing stops the Undertaker. The lights went out, the "dong! dong! dong!"s filled the arena and a blue haze came over the entire building. With a crash of lightning onto a casket awaiting on the stage, the Undertaker sits up and stares coldly at Kane. The Undertaker proceeded to inform Kane that his time away from the ring was merely to consol his parents souls, as he would have to do the one thing he had promised to never do - fight Kane.
01. March (early April?) 1998: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon. It was the night that the WWF finally beat WCW in the ratings war for the first time in quite awhile. If you'll recall, Steve Austin had just captured the WWF title for the first time, and Mr. McMahon was none too happy about it. It was only a run-in by Dude Love that prevented the two from tearing each other apart before their epic feud could even get going. Really, this isn't one of my personal favorite moments so much as it is historic. And it began what has become the steam roller of a ratings victory machine the WWF has become.

Well, there we go. Email me and let me know which ones you like/dislike/whatever.

See ya.
