Notes
1. Patterson wins a fictitious tournament; returns to the US and World Wrestling Federation television with the Intercontinental title.

2. Santana continues to defend the belt for two weeks after losing it, until the title change was aired on television.

3. The Warrior vacates the title on 4/1/90 after winning the World Heavyweight Championship.

4. Perfect defeats Tito Santana in the finals of an 8-man tournament to capture the title.

5. Michaels is stripped of the title in taking a leave of absence.

6. Ramon defeats Rick Martel for the vacant title.

7. Goldust's title is held up after a match versus Savio Vega on 4/1/96. He wins the rematch to reclaim the belt.

8. Ahmed is stripped of the title due to inability to defend it (thanks to an injury caused by Faarooq Asad).

9. Mero defeats Faarooq in the finals of a tournament on Raw to win the vacant title.

10. Commissioner Slaughter forces Austin to forfeit the belt due to a neck injury suffered days before at SummerSlam.

11. Owen defeats Faarooq in the finals of a tournament to crown the new IC champion.

12. Austin forfeits the title, which is given to Maivia.

13. Because Triple H is injured, McMahon orders a one night tournament to crown a new IC Champion.

14. Days earlier, in a match for Smackdown!, Jericho defends against Chyna, a double-pin occurs, and the title is temporarily held up. On the following Monday, the two are declared co-champions, if one loses, both lose championship status.

15. Chris Jericho beats Chyna and Hardcore Holly to become the sole Intercontinental Champion.

16. Benoit pins Jericho during a triple threat match with the first fall deciding the Intercontinental Title, and the second fall deciding the European Title, both of which were then held by Kurt Angle.

17. Chyna and Eddie Guerrero team against Trish Stratus and Val Venis in a tag team match where Eddie or Chyna could win the title by pinning Trish or Val. In the end, Chyna pins Trish Stratus to win the title. Val Venis is never pinned.

18. Edge (WCW United States Champion) defeats Test (WWF Intercontinental Champion) in a title unification match. Since the WWF won the "winner take all" match later in the evening, the unified champion is called the WWF Intercontinental Champion. The WCW U.S. title ceases to exist.

19. World Wrestling Federation Entertainment officially changes their name to World Wrestling Entertainment on May 6, 2002, thus getting the "F" out and becoming WWE. Eddie Guerrero is the first WWE Intercontinental Champion.

20. Triple H defeats Kane to unify the Intercontinental Title with the RAW brand World Heavyweight Title, ending the Intertcontinental Title's 23-plus year run.

21. The Intercontinental Title is brought back and the champion is determined by holding a battle royal of all former Intercontinental champions (with noteable exceptions, such as Booker T). Christian wins the battle royal after reentering the match when the officials did not see his elimination by Booker T.
