Sloth E-Mail

Here are some of the e-mail messages we have received at this, our Sloth website

Sloths are not a great idea for pets. They are cute, and sweet and slow, with personality traits like a monkey, but I myself have almost been sliced open by a full grown male here in Costa Rica. They move very quickly and can injure you with their claws.

Baby sloths when found abandoned are fed goat's milk through a small baby bottle before they start eating leaves. Fruits and baby food have too much sugar. It is very rare for a mother sloth whose baby has fallen to leave the tree to recover it from the ground, as the danger to it's own life is so great, that is why there is such a big problem reuniting orphan sloths with their mothers (when the mothers are visible).

Babies can stay with their mothers for up to nine months.

There is a sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica on the Caribbean coast and their website provides a lot of answers. It is easy to find online.

Hope these answers help some people.

Thanks,
Valerie

I had the privilege of spending a couple of weeks in a Yanomamo village in the Amazon rainforest. One of the families there had 4 sloths living in their house. All four were orphans and had been taken in when they were babies. Interestingly, they were all potty-trained (using a real toilet) and wandered freely around the house (very slowly). Whenever I visited, I would hold one of the sloths. They seemed to be accustomed to humans. I only saw one of them make a semi-aggressive “swipe” with their claw once. We left her alone for a while and she calmed down. The baby of the group was still a bit rowdy and would sometimes try to bite, but he never actually succeeded. We usually just picked them up by their very strong arms and let them hang around our necks, kind of in a prolonged hug.

In response to the person who asked about “de-clawing” a sloth, I think it would ultimately kill them since you would be removing the very thing they use for climbing, grappling and handling their food. They would just be left with stumps at the ends of their very long arms. The people who kept them said they would only eat leaves from a specific type of tree in the rainforest, so dietary needs would be the biggest hurdle if you wanted to keep one as a pet. I’m sure an exotic animal breeder will find a way to breed a sloth that can survive on north-american vegetation someday. You’d probably have to dump a lot of money into a climate-controlled habitat, too. The owners also told me that they only breed once in their lifetime and that when they’re in heat, looking for a mate, they scream loudly. Never heard it, but I was told it’s loud and a bit creepy. The four sloths I was privileged to meet were very easy to like. I definitely wanted to bring one home. The tapir that wandered around the village was pretty entertaining, too. If you left your door unlocked, he would find a way to open it and wander into the house to mooch a meal. He was very stubborn and didn’t want to leave, no matter how hard we pushed him or smacked his but. He followed me around a lot. Very funny critter.

HEYYYY THIS IS ME WITH A SLOTH IN COLOMBIA!!!

Here are some more photos of my Slowpoke Sloth. One of him and his wife, his adventure to a medieval fair, him making a gingerbread house, and one of him with his finished gingerbread house.

I have a two toed sloth. His name is Saami's (portuques for less fingers), his last name is Samba. Yes they do deficate at the bottom of a tree, or cage, more to get it AWAY from where they hang so other animals are not attacted to the limbs above. ALso not far because on the ground they are defensless, they cannot run. I have lived in Brasil for many years, and sloths fo not run in packs. Fact is one will would have a bay each year, same tree...never leaving the yard, yet it was wild. Once the baby grew, she would become pregnant again ( never seen romeo), and the old baby would move one. Sloths eat leaves, fruit and Samba lovesssssss strawberries, but he has to stay away from thing with seeds, as in grapes, their digestion is so slow they could easily get sick. They are strong swimmers, they are strong animals. Their bodies are HARD, BONY. lots of muscles and lots of tendons. For holding on for a lifetime. They life up to 30 years if taken care of. They need a constant temp, Saami'e does well at 74 year round, and we live in a cold climate. It is said they can move about 13 feet a day...they lie. Sammi's got out once and cleared the house climbing every thnig, every curtain and hard a blast. They need to be watched to make sure they get proper calcium, and protein. Not a beginner exotic, and Yes no matter what they are a wild animal and THEY BITE, and they have some real nice fangies. Sammi's is a rescued animal, from a compound in Florida. We can exploit him ( like take him to parks ect. ) and of course not breed him. We just give a as much of a chance of life as we can, since is captive raised, and cannot be released in the wild :(

I have a rescued sloth from a florida compound that had many, many exotics put down from starvation and misuse. He is a two toe-er and yup, they need experience for care. We do a blood draw every few months since their main lacks can be protein and calcium, they need a lot of calcium due to the skeletorial make-up. Read some weird stuff in some sites tonight though...such as "pettting wild sloths in the wild", only poo once a week...stuff. Sloths no matter what, hand raised or not, are dumb. They are wild and they will bite. They have great hearing and if anyone really wanted to shushhh up a tree and pet a wild sloth, ummm they bite. They bite hard and they hold on when they bite like a dang pitbull. < will send picks of arms :) But all in all they learn, from smell who they

I live this website it really helped me with my sloth project!

hi,
Hi there! My boyfriend & I are massive sloth fans from Newtownards, Northern Ireland! I've visited the Sloth Website on many occasions & find it both amusing & informative! I especially enjoy reading Slowpoke's adventures!
As the proud owner of a little Slowpoke myself, I love to take him everywhere with me - he's been on various holidays, tourist attractionS and to the cinema! He recently came for a long weekend to London with 4 of us to celebrate our friends' engagement. Slowpoke had a great time & was really excited when he was invited to the wedding!!
I have enclosed some pics, one of Slowpoke at Tower Bridge in London, one after the engagement celebrations a bit worse for wear, and one of him at our friend's wedding!! (I made his suit myself!!)
Keep up the good work on the site!!
Sandra :)

hi,

Dear M.R, I have read your webpage and it is very unique. I like the music when I go into the webpage, it's very catchy and i like the tune and rhythme of it.Do you know that sloths may have algae on their skin but caterpillars cling onto its body to eat the algae? By the way, do you know that algae is not classified as a plant anymore? My science teacher told me that. I love your webpage! It's great, with lots of facts!!!:)
hello, i went on your website for biology and it is great!
bring slowpoke to england so i can c him please
I saw a sloth eating an ice cream cone at Ben and Jerry's one time. Then the person behind the counter tried to rip him off, you know, gave him three real tiny scoops, since it was a banana split.
Dear Webmaster,
My name is Simon, and my friend calls me Simon sloth. This is because of my massive interest in sloths, and my apearance. I also sleep... a lot!!! I am interested to know of your take on the following extract. I found it quite an eyeopener, and mildly upsetting..

"The three-toed sloth is not well informed about the outside world."

Thanks,
Simon Sloth

Sloths are the cooles animals in the world!

Dear Sirs, I live in Santarém - Pará (Amazon Region), Brazil. I work in the Tourism Area, I am a Tour Guide. Sloths are common in this area then I was wondering how nice it would be to learn more and share information to other people. I would like to get a book of sloth. Do you have and email or Web I can contact for ? I know my English is not very good but I hope you understand what I am looking for. Congratulations for your SITE, it is nice to knowing you have been building something like that to share information about this lazy but interesting animal.
Yeah....I work at a Medical Center. We have a guy working at night we nicknamed "The Sloth". He can be found lounging in the security badging office in front of the ER Tuesday through Sunday nights from 11 PM-7:30 AM. Once, when he was caught sleeping, head back, he claimed he was counting sprinkler heads....there were two. Go figure. Anyway, we found the web site quite amusing, mostly at the expense of his ego. Keep up the good work.
My condolences to the poeple who made this web-site. I thought I was the only person who loves sloths! ooohh well SLOTHS RULE THE WORLD!!!!

I am the fortunate owner of SIX fine sloths: hemoe & his wife-little sallie anne, NATE, capin, Sidney and shirley. Hemoe goes everywhere with me. All sloths were purchased in Denver. They have wonderful personalities, and Capin is a sloth MD. Nate is an engineer and Sidney is SOS-sidney oscar sloth, the crazy DJ sloth. Shirley is his girl. Little Sallie Anne dreams of being the first high fashion model sloth. They are quite a group. I am working on a children's book story line called "simply sloths" about these 6 wonderful little group. thank you for you site, my dad won't even look at it, he is so sick of me and my sloths!!!

Where can o find a documentary film all about sloths? Thank you for any help you might be able to offer. Todd
In reference to:
Fact for 7/6/2004:
They can defend themselves with sharp claws, but their main form of protection is their camouflage¨" ...

I would like to add that Sloths have unusually thick skin. This puts predators óff'eating them and are only favoured by Jaguars when alternative food sources are scarce (Sloths are the last resort).

Please elaborate on the Sloths swimming ability as water is a large part of their environment during the rainy season when the Amazon floods.

Thank you
Michelle

Ho Webmaster,
great site about slothes (sloths? i don't know...). It may interest you, that I, together with some friends of mine, discovered the one and only HUMAN sloth. He (his name is "Thomas") lives in a small town called Wiesmoor (way down in the dark tropic jungles of Northern Germany). So, if you want to update your site, then don't forget to mention the 2- and 3-toed slothes cousin from Europe.
My co-workers and I happened to find this site while surfing on the web. They have also taken pictures of Slowpoke the Sloth at various places as an ongoing joke at the office.

Your sloth website is my favourite site! I have always loved sloths! And the part about Slowpoke the sloth visiting places is my fav part! I have had a slowpoke sloth ty for ages now. and last year, we bought him a wife! it was just another slowpoke, but we named her Slow-Lee. Once at McDonalds, they were having teenie beanie babies in the happy meal, and one of them was Shweetheart the orangatang. we got one that becamed there son! then we got another one, and named it Schweet-Lee, and that was their daughter! All my friends have Slowpokes too anf they are all named different things! in all, we have 6 slowpokes! they have parties and everything, but my slowpoke is the original, and he is the only one named slowpoke.

from your for sure no.1 fan,
Jane

My name is Sky. I am 12 years of age. I only like sloth's because they are stupid animals, well thought to be by Sid from Ice Age and ever since I have been in love with them.
love your website! i am also in the slothophile camp, so it was great to come across your site (i had a lot of fun with the quiz and pasting sloths in the tree).

in fact, the timing was kind of funny> i recently just found out about AVIARIOS DEL CARIBE and was thinking about volunteering there. i was curious if there was a way for me to get in touch with some of the folks (i think one of them was named linda) on your site who said they had volunteered there?

I live in the rain forest on a small island in Panama and we have several sloths living in our trees and walking in front of our house. We have seen two with new babies. Sometimes at night they make a sort of noise that sounds like someone whistling or playing the same notes over and over on a flute. Marilyn
'The gathering of Sloth lovers'. Can't everybody out there just give those darling sloths THE RECOGNITION THEY NEED AND DESERVE?

I used to think that sloths only existed in zoos and in a secret location with the whale sharks and resplendant quetzals until I visited Panama. We were driving from Boquete to Bocas del Toro and saw it on the side of the road. At first, I thought it was a dead possum, but we turned around for a better look and discovered that it was a sloth. We took several pictures and watched as he checked us out. It then turned and crawled into the bushes. What an awesome and memorable experience! We'll send the pictures when we get them developed.

I love Sloths! I've been looking everywhere for a sloth website, and now I've found one! THank you sooo much for making this site! :.) I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who cares about sloths. Thanks :.)
I work at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, OR. We have a two-toed sloth (I'm not sure of sp. at this time). Her name is Chalupa. She has a toucan to keep her company and likes to ramble about at night and early morning. I have been spending time there to try and raise interest and educate people about these great animals. Your site has been very helpful.

PS: I had a sloth in my driveway when I was a child an lived in Panama. It took about 3 hours to get to my backyard and into the forest.

I only went on this site to get some pictures and maybe a little info for my english report on the word slothful (because you have to give an example of the word). But I never expected this!! This site is so cool! I love the music. Great idea. It's like, here come the sloths! I'll have to explore this site to the fullest, and put it on my favorites.

Karen

I have been looking for a long time for certain sloth merchandise which at this point, I have miraculously found. A site called walldrawn.com has sloth merchandise. Upon entering the site goto wildlife and they have a somewhat cheesy sloth print but, the best that I have found. It appears that you can get the print on several items. I was going to post this directly to your site but, yahoo would not let me do it. Great site and pass this along if you feel it is appropriate.
Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mark

It was good timing that my brother and I found this web-site, because my brother is doing a report on 3-toed Sloths. This web-site gave him a lot of facts about Sloths and fun quizes about 3-toed sloths!

Heather

My mom did not believe that a sloth had fur and plants growing on its body. She said that it would be ridiculous to have an animal with plants growing out of it. Your website cleared the air! Thanks for all the great information. We so enjoyed the music, too, marched and danced. THANK YOU.
I'd like to let other sloth-fans know where they can purchase a custom-made sloth. Stuffe and Nonsense, a company in California can be found on the web a http://www.members.home.com/sargon/index.html . They have a beautiful site and will make your sloth to order. I just received my gray three toed sloth and he looks just like the real thing!

Naomi

On the matter of sloths defecating: recently we saw fossilized sloth dung (coprylites) for sale at the gift shop at Garvie's Point Park in Glen Cove, Long Island. We wanted to buy some, but we decided not to, because I don't think that my mother would really appreciate it!

According to the official Scrabble guidebook, there exists a word "ai", meaning a three-toed sloth. This is a very helpful word for Scrabble fans, thought you might like to know.

Guess what? Recently I witnessed an animal that I cannot explain...I am relatively certain that it is a sloth. I nearly had to seek therapy after seeing this thing! My Mother in law had thought that aliens had arrived...afraid to tell the other more normal members of her family, or so they would have you believe.( She had just turned 80, and didn't want to be judged on those merrits.) No disrespect intended. I have done investigative work before and found the tracks and other miscellaneous clues intriguing to say the least... To make a long story longer, I did a little stake out and about sht my pants... Now you know what I mean when I said guess what! Well, guess what? This happened right here in the good 'ol USofA...and there is more... This is not a hoax... I fear for her safety as well as the safety of the animals involved...These things have some serious claws and seem overly active for sloths as they have been previously stereotyped, although to call them slow seems conservative...Bizarre seems closer to the fact. Please contact me if you have any imput in reguard to this matter as I am presently over a thousand miles from where this happened and promissed mom that I would not create a stampede to her front door...Savy? Thanks for your time, Craig / Sloth Sloothe
There's sloth shirts and mugs at:

I Loved your sloth web site!! I esspecially like the slowpoke the sloth stories. The best part of the stories was when it took slowpoke the sloth 3 hours to get up half the soda machine. When i read that, i was laughing so hard that i rolled on the floor and could barely breath. It was hilarious! i just wanted to congradulat you on your great web page and I hope you make more slowpoke stiries. Because of your page, my favorite animal is the sloth.

-Sara n.

Please I want all people to know that it is not rational to keep sloths as pets due to the fact that each sloth has an individual diet. Many sloths have died due to a lack of the correct nutritional diet. If you are thinking about getting one as a pet STOP! Please understand that each individual sloth has a specific diet.

Angela

We love sloths...he...he...he......contact us in Helwan, Egypt to give us our personal pet sloth (by computer of course). We are American students in Egypt from New Jersey.
Your sights very good! And that's a good compliment from someone like me nice music for some SLOTHS!
The person with the pet Sloth is so cruel, he/she should learn that they are solitary animals. sorry to burst your bubble, but it's just plain cruel. I have no more to say to him/her. this message also goes to all Sloth owners. SAVE THE SLOTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi. I have a friend who just recently acquired a sloth. She was told it was a bottle fed 3 mo old male. It seems very large for a baby and is very active. Can you tell me how old a 3 month old should be and do you have any info about diet in captivity? Thanks for any help you can give.

Darlene Snyder -------------------------------------------------- Webmaster Comment: For accurate information on this you should contact one of the zoos mentioned on our "places" page.

WELL DONE!! I love sloths!!! Like some people are obsessed with dogs or horses, I love sloths. You are most definitely welcome at my home any time. Once again, good work, and may the Lord bless you!

There is an adorable sloth called Snuffy in the small mammals building at Bermuda Aquarium and Zoo. I had the pleasure of working there for 2 months, and got to be good friends with Snuffy - he's the gentlest thing, so relaxed. One season, some sparrows built a nest on his stomach and even laid an egg - he didn't care a bit! Plus the golden lion tamarins, in the enclosure with him, occasionally have the cheek to steal his food - right out of his mouth! Snuffy really is lovely.

Friends: We lived in the Lagunita Country Club, Caracas, Venezuela and have sloths in the environs of our house. On the way to the school, we see sloths crossing the street. Sometimes the people slow the vehicles, take them in their arms and they put them to the other side of the street... They are incredibly interesting animals and they seem so peaceful! You do not have Venezuela on your list but they are seen with very many frequency all over.

Congratulations on the page. It is very informative!
