The Story

IN THE BEGINNING
There was nothing in the beginning: no heaven, no earth, no stars, no light. This Void was ruled by the Ancient Ones, psychotic demons who governed with chaos and disorder. After an indefinable period of time, their descendants, the Elder Gods, became restless, and initiated a coup. The war seemed to be waged forever, until Enki, Lord of Magicians and leader of the Elder Gods, sent his son, his strongest and bravest soldier, Marduk, to assassinate the leader of the Ancient Ones, Tiamat, the mad serpent goddess, also called Kur. In order to accomplish this, Marduk was granted fifty powers, each with its weapon and Sign.

The sneak attack was successful, partly; although Marduk had slain Tiamat, the Ancient Ones still posed a threat to the rebellion. Nevertheless, Marduk cut the Snake in half, creating the heavens with one half, and the earth with the other. A Gate was created to keep the Ancient Ones out, a Gate with a hidden Key. And beyond it, the Ancient Ones wait to enter, seething in their rage. Sorcerers and scholars say that Tiamat is "Dead but Dreaming."

Humans were fashioned from the blood of Kingu, commander of Tiamat’s armies. These are the secret Keys that could open the Gate, unleashing hordes of vengeful demons upon the Earth. Every newborn is a potential threat to the universe.

The Elder Gods are forgetful, negligent of their duties at the Gate. Their worshippers must remind them constantly through prayer and ritual. They are the ones who worry whenever a baby is born.

Their worst fears have been realized.

ISHKEGAL
Sorcerers say he was born two thousand years ago. Also that he had killed his twin sister in the womb, and his mother at birth. In the two millennia that he has lived, he has studied ancient manuscripts, forgotten tomes of the most powerful conjurations, including a way to open the Gate.

Needless to say, the coven of the Elder Gods was not enthusiastic about this development. Their pleas to the Elder Gods ignored, they formulated and implemented a desperate plan to assassinate Ishkegal. It failed; Ishkegal, more powerful and resourceful than any opposition the coven had faced before, has conjured several Grigori, – Watchers, – to protect him.

The coven has just devised a bold new scheme, a final act of desperation.

LINNITH
It took them half a century, but the coven had succeeded: they had managed to resurrect the soul of Ishkegal’s dead twin. It was their hope that Linnith’s taste for vengeance would provide ample motivation for her to ascend the astral steps, earn Marduk’s fifty powers, slay the bloodthirsty Watchers, and finally defeat Ishkegal himself before he could open the Gate.

You are Linnith, and this is the mission set before you.
