Mermaid

Our fingers were intertwined,
Sand between our toes,
I turned to look at you.
I was nearly blinded by your breeze-swept hair,
Like liquid sunshine,
Adorning a face that could launch a thousand ships to war.
And it was hard to imagine
That the sea wasn't created just for us.

We walked slowly down the shore, languid steps,
Baby steps, we had all the time in the world.
You were so in my soul, I could see only us.
Our shadows followed us at their own pace.
Our hearts beat as one,
Following the undulations, the waves.
Your eyes were the exact same color as the ocean,
And I drowned in them, in their gaze.
No one has ever looked at me the way you did.
We had it all. We had the purest, the best love.
