On this page you will learn things that aren't commonly known about The Black Cauldron. Mistakes made in the movie, pictures of cut scenes, and other info.
1. In Dallben's cottage, when Dallben unrolls the scroll, the curled side is on the right. But when it changes angles to Taran's point of view, the curled side is on the left.~~Spotted by Tealin and Marcelle.
2. Taran burns his hand on the top of the kettle on the stove. But, then how is Dallben able to pick the top off the kettle (without any protection) and not burn his hand?
3.When we first see the Horned King; in the scene before he walks down the stairs and talks the his dead bodies; we see the back of his head come up on screen. It jerks for a second, because a sequence of animation was repeated when the filming occurred.
4.When Taran looks for Hen in the Forbidden Forest, we see him crawl under a small branch and weave in and out of a few small trees. This animation was recycled from The Sword and the Stone when Wart goes into the forest to retrieve Kay's arrow.
5.The redheaded Henchmen that shakes Creeper saying: "More Women!" is a self-portrait of animator Phil Nibbelink.
6.The bowl that is filled with water in the Horned King's throne room is always full. No matter how many times Creeper, The Henchman, and Taran spill it.
7. Fflewddur's harp has a problem: the strings change numbers through the film. Also the strings that snap "magically" repair themselves.
8.Taran left the Magic Sword's scabbard behind with the attacking Henchman. He wasn't carrying it with him when he and Eilonwy escaped. Which leads me to ask: then why in the forest clearing scene after Taran, Eilony and Fflewddur escape, does Taran have the scabbard?
9. When Taran, Eilonwy and Fflewddur are in the forest after the escape, Taran's belt changes from a rope to an actual belt.~~Spotted by Gurgi1910
10. In the first Fair Folk scene, with all the little children are watching the 'guests', the Little Girl Fair Folk says: "I think they wake up soon." with the Little Boy's voice.
11. If you look carefull when the Fair Folk swarm around out heroes, to Taran's left you can see Tinkerbell.
12. Eilonwy's bauble disappears off and on during the film.
13. Doli just appears after the witches take the sword.
14. When Taran says: "It's ours!" when they see the Cauldron being pushed out of the dirt, the next scene when the witches are laughing at them, all the characters are standing in a different position and in different spots.
15.Taran's hand is see through when he is pulling on the chains (just before he pushes the gate open) to open the gate so Eilonwy and Fflewddur can escape from the castle.
16. The Gate is closed when Fflewddur is trying to pull Taran back into the boat.~~Spotted by the brother of "Gurgi1910"
17. Why would a heavy Cauldron float in water?
NOTE: The original image I had of this cel was lost way back during the Geocities/Yahoo server change. I have been getting SO many email from you fans the past 6 months that I tore through all my old papers to find a print out I had of the cel. So please pardon the terrible image quality. It's better than nothing right?
This was a production cel that went on sale awhile ago on E-Bay. It is a production cel for a scene that was cut for being too gross. Can you blame them?(YES!!!)I believe this is from the scene where the Henchmen is being dissolved by the green mist. Yuch!
Also check out this YouTube video of the 1985 Pinocchio VHS which has a TBC trailer with pieces of the cut scene in it:
See my The Black Cauldron vs. The Gummi Bears page!
Ever notice that Hogarth Hughes from "The Iron Giant" looks very much like Taran? You must see this movie, it's very, very, good!!!
Back in 1994 a British company decided to make a animated movie of George MacDonald's book "The Princess and the Goblin". I've read the book and it's a good story, but the movie stank!!!
Why is this Black Cauldron related you say? If you've seen the movie you'd know. The movie has the same 'feel' as The Black Cauldron.
In the movie, Princess Irene (sounds similar to "Eilonwy", doesn't it?) and Curdie (who looks alot like Taran except for his headband) battle a bunch of Goblins. In the book, Curdie loses his way in the mines and stumbles into a Goblin tunnel and they capture him. In the movie, Curdie is brought to the Goblin's underground castle (which never existed in the book) and held there. Irene gets a ball of thread from her Grandmother, and it leads her to Curdie in the castle. This scene totally reminded me of The Black Cauldron. A Princess saving a peasant boy, and leading through a castle with a magic ball. The scene gave me major deja vu. It was so wierd.
I though I should bring this to the fan's attention. Did anyone else besides me notice this? Please let me know!
