Welcome to the Labyrinth. A place where nothing is as it seems. With its many colourful characters,
one can only be certain of the journey through it to be memorable and exciting.
Directed by Jim Henson, Labyrinth offers you fantasy, romance, adventure.. your dreams.. all in a turn of a crystal. The tale of
young girl's journey to rescue her brother had me rooting for her all the way. Sarah (Jenniffer
Connelly), had wished for her brother to be taken away by the goblins not knowing it would come true.
To get him back before he gets turned into a goblin forever, she has to solve the Labyrinth in thirteen
hours, a challenge from the Goblin King, Jareth (David Bowie). With the help of her new friends, she
overcame all the dangers thrown her way. These friends include Hoggle, Ludo, Sir Didymus and his dog,
Ambrocious.
Released in 1986, the Labyrinth entralled me no end. It has brought me endless pleasure. ever since I've watched it in 1990,
I've been obssessed with the show. My favourite part is when Sarah and Jareth danced together in a bubble ballroom. I gushed
over her gown of silver and white. I drooled over Jareth in a shiny dark blue coat with a diamante and his hair streaked with blue.
With David Bowie playing Jareth, it's no wonder that I've been fervently wishing my sisters away!! If only to get a
glimpse of him. And perhaps to dance at the ball with him... share a peach or two..
Now, why don't I take you on a little tour around Labyrinth? Let us start at the door..
Me: Hoggle! Nice to meet you again! Still spraying those annoying faeries?
You: Hello!!
Hoggle: Hello, hello!! Nice to meet you! *57 faeries* Where are you off to?
Me: The Labyrinth. I'm being the tour guide. Got to be going now. There's so much to see. Bye, Hoggle!!
That was Hoggle. He's sweet. Rather partial to jewellery..(here's a tip. Be sure you wear a lot of
jewellery in the Labyrinth. I don't think the goblins accept credit cards). He has only one gripe- his name
being mispronounced by almost everyone. Just in case you meet him alone, repeat after me, it's Hog-gle.
H-O-G-G-L-E, Hoggle. That wasn't too hard, was it?
Okay, now we are in the Labyrinth. Take your time, look around. Amazing, ain't it? Now let's see if the worm
is at home. I'm sure he'll offer us a cup of tea.
Me: Knock, knock!! Anyone home? 'Tis me. And I've brought a friend.
Worm: Allo! Lovely day, ain't it? Come inside, have a cup of tea!
Me: *Wink! Told ya!* Can't stop for long. I'm showing my friend here around the Labyrinth. I do hope I won't get
ourselves hopelessly lost in the Labyrinth...
Worm: You best be off on your way then!
Us: Goodbye!
Me:Which way shall we go now? Left or right? Hmm..let's go right. Come on then!
And so here we are. The castle lies yonder. Now this is a tricky part of the Labyrinth. we've got to watch our
steps here. It changes all the time and it won't do any good to make marks or anything. Believe me. Heck, it's been tried
and all it leads to was to have your mother called a 'fragging aardvark'! Let's see if we'll meet Alph and Ralph.
We'll see if you can answer their riddle then. Oh, I see them there!
You: I don't see the Labyrinth changing or anything. Everything's dead calm. nothing's moving. But I can hear music faintly. Something about magic spells and puppy dog's tails...
Me: That comes from the castle. We're not far off from it now! Well, you just keep your eyes open and remember nothing is as it seems.
We turned right, right and yet another right. Voila! Face to face with Alph and Ralph, Jim and Tim.
Me: Now, take a look around.
You: Hey! That was a dead a minute ago! It is changing! Gosh! This is eerie.
Jim: To get out of here, try one of these doors.
Tim: One of them leads to the castle..and the other leads to..
Ralph: Ba ba ba bum...
Tim: Certain Death!!!
Guards: Ooh....
Alph: Ah,ah,ah..don't ask which is which.
You: Why not?
Jim: We can't tell you. We don't know.
Tim: But they do.
Me: You can only ask one of them. A word of caution, one of them tells the truth and one of them lies.
Ralph: He always lies.
Alph: I do not!!
You: Never mind all that. Hush, I need to think...
Guards: Oooh...the little lady needs to think.
To be continued...
