Highlander: The Series
The Saga Begins
Highlander: The Series follows the life and times of Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul) of the clan MacLeod. He was born in the year 1592 in the Highlands of Scotland. He is one of a subspecies of super-humans that call them selfs "Immortals", because they never age and can only die, permanently, if they are beheaded.
The mystery of the Immortals existence lies within "The Quickening", an extraordinary life force that all of them possess. This Quickening is the essence of their being.
From the time of their enigmatic birth, they live a somewhat normal life, aging naturally and not knowing they have this sleeping Quickening inside them, until they are killed, either by accident or on purpose. From this time on, they are Immortal, and become part of "The Game" -- the fight between good and evil Immortals that has been going on since the beginning of time, and will only end when one Immortal is left. It is said that when there are only a few Immortals left, that they will feel and uncontrollable pull to a far away land, where the few that remain will fight to the last. This is called "The Gathering". "In the end, there can be only one"
The Game has a set of unwritten rules, that no Immortal will break. The first and foremost of these rules is that no Immortal can fight on Holy Ground. This means any place that any peoples or any religion from any time period deems as sacred. How the Immortals keep track of all these places or even know at all, is a mystery. Another of these rules is that they must fight one on one. There can be no teaming up on each other.
Thier Quickening is the key to their Immortality. Although they an physically die by any means that can kill a normal human, their Quickening regenerates their wounds, and brings them back to life. It also acts as a protection device. They can sense the Quickening of another Immortal when the other Immortal comes within their vicinity.
When one Immortal beheads another Immortal, he receives the others power and essence, in other words, his Quickening. The power of the Quickening is demonstrated at this time by a violent energy discharge, as the Quickening of the dead Immortal leaves his body and enters into the body of the victors.
